‘The Voice’ Battle Rounds Deliver an Unexpected Matchup as Two Singers Tackle Tucker Wetmore’s Hit

Season 30 of The Voice is moving quickly, and the Battle Rounds have already brought some difficult decisions for the coaches. In the latest showdown, Team Adam’s Evan James and Luke Curran teamed up to perform Tucker Wetmore’s “Wind Up Missin’ You,” creating an unusual pairing that left the judges impressed but forced Adam Levine to choose between two very different artists.

As the Battle Rounds begin, each coach pairs two singers from their team to perform together. Both contestants must demonstrate their talent while convincing their coach that they deserve a place in the next stage. When the performances are equally compelling, deciding who advances can be particularly challenging.

That was the situation Adam faced after Evan and Luke delivered a strong performance of Wetmore’s country hit.

Two Artists With Very Different Musical Styles

Evan made an impression during his Blind Audition with a rendition of Morgan Wallen’s “Wasted on You.” His performance earned chair turns from Kelly Clarkson, Riley Green and Adam Levine. Despite attracting interest from three coaches, Evan chose Team Adam, becoming the only country artist among the 12 singers on Levine’s team.

Luke, meanwhile, brought a folk-influenced sound to his audition. His performance of Jim Croce’s “Operator (That’s Not the Way It Feels)” earned him chair turns from Adam and Riley. He ultimately joined Team Adam, explaining that he had been a fan of The Voice from the very beginning.

With Evan’s country sound and Luke’s folk sensibilities, the two singers had noticeably different approaches to music. Their Battle Round offered an opportunity to see how well those styles could work together.

Evan and Luke proved they could complement each other onstage, bringing different qualities to “Wind Up Missin’ You.”

Evan appeared at ease performing the contemporary country track, giving it a sound that suited his strengths. Luke, despite not typically singing country music, adapted to the song while maintaining elements of his own style.

Queen Latifah was the first coach to offer feedback, praising the way the two performers worked together.

“Y’all sounded locked in from the very beginning,” she said, adding that the decision ahead would be a difficult one.

Riley Green also commended both singers for their performances. However, he admitted that he would lean toward Evan if he were making the decision, explaining that Evan’s sound was a closer fit for the song.

Kelly Clarkson saw merit in both approaches and highlighted how their contrasting voices made the pairing interesting.

“You have such different tones. I actually find this, like, a really cool, odd pairing,” she said.

Clarkson then explained what each contestant brought to the stage. Evan had a strong presence and the ability to command the space, while Luke stood out for his raspy voice, soulful delivery and storytelling quality.

Her comments underscored the central challenge of the Battle: the singers had different strengths, making it difficult to compare them directly.

Adam Levine Makes His Decision

Despite the positive feedback, the final choice rested with Adam Levine, who acknowledged how closely matched the contestants were.

In his view, Evan and Luke were “neck and neck,” making the decision far from straightforward.

Ultimately, Adam selected Evan as the winner of the Battle Round, ending Luke’s journey in the competition.

Explaining his decision, Levine said Evan had edged ahead because of the power of his voice and his ability to fill a room.

“Evan edged him out a little bit,” Adam said. “He has a big, powerful voice that fills a room and whenever that happens, it is incredibly hard not to stay with someone like that.”

He also suggested that Evan could surprise viewers in the next phase, saying the singer could “absolutely smash Cut Week.”

The decision came down to a close contest between two artists with distinct musical identities. While Evan’s powerful vocals and country style ultimately secured him the win, Luke’s folk-inspired sound and storytelling ability also earned recognition from the coaches.
