The One Condition Behind King Charles’ Balmoral Invitation That Prince Harry Found “Disrespectful”

When Queen Elizabeth II’s health deteriorated at Balmoral in 2022, King Charles invited Prince Harry to Scotland so he could be with his grandmother. But according to Harry’s account, the invitation came with one condition that immediately caused tension between father and son.
The rift between Harry and the Royal Family had already deepened after he and Meghan Markle stepped away from royal duties and moved to the United States. Their relationship with King Charles, Prince William and Kate Middleton remained strained, and the tension became particularly visible around the Queen’s final days and funeral.
Harry’s Account of the Balmoral Invitation

The late Queen was staying at Balmoral when her health worsened. Charles called Harry and asked him to come to Scotland.
Harry later described the frantic period in his memoir, Spare, explaining that he was also trying to find out whether William and Kate would be travelling to Balmoral.
After receiving no immediate response from William, Harry and Meghan began looking at flight options. With the press already contacting them, they decided they could not delay their plans any longer and told their team they would miss the WellChild Awards while travelling to Scotland.
Charles later called Harry again and invited him to stay at Balmoral.
But Harry said the invitation quickly became a source of conflict.
The Condition That Sparked the Argument

According to Harry, Charles told him that he was welcome at Balmoral — but Meghan was not.
Harry described the explanation as “nonsensical” and “disrespectful” and said he immediately objected to the way his wife had been discussed.
He recalled telling his father: “Don’t ever speak about my wife that way.”
Harry said Charles then explained that he did not want a large number of people around. He pointed out that other wives would not be travelling to Balmoral and that Kate was not coming either, which was why Meghan should not come.
Harry’s response, as recounted in Spare, was that this explanation would have been enough from the beginning.
A Brief Show of Unity
Despite the tension, William, Kate, Harry and Meghan later appeared together during a royal walkabout at Windsor following Queen Elizabeth II’s death.
The appearance briefly presented the former “Fab Four” as a united front, although the atmosphere surrounding the Sussexes’ relationship with the rest of the family remained noticeably different.
Harry and Meghan had visited the UK only months earlier for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. They brought their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, giving them an opportunity to see their grandfather and great-grandmother.
Are the Family Wounds Finally Healing?
For years, Harry and Meghan remained estranged from much of the Royal Family. However, more recent events have suggested that relations with King Charles may be beginning to soften.
Last month, Harry and Meghan reunited with Charles for a private meeting at Highgrove. During the visit, the King also saw Archie and Lilibet for the first time in four years.
William and Kate, however, did not attend the meeting and instead continued with their own schedules.
The relationship between Harry and William also appears to remain strained, with the brothers seemingly not speaking regularly.
That distance could mean Archie and Lilibet have yet to meet their cousins, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis — another sign of just how complicated the family rift remains.
