As the United States marked a landmark national anniversary, the British monarch surprised many with a warm, lighthearted tribute that gently reflected on the long and complicated history shared by the two countries

The Royal family marked the US 250th anniversary with a special message on Saturday, 4 July.

July 4 marks the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

The Royal family reflected on King Charles and Queen Camilla’s trip in April to Washington DC, New York and Virginia on a State visit in recognition of the occasion.

They said, along with a video roundup of their trip: “Today, America celebrates their 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence – it was great to celebrate this milestone with you all earlier in the year!”
