Dolly Parton’s Niece Reveals How Her Own Cancer Diagnosis Raised Fears About Her Aunt’s Health

Dolly Parton’s niece, Danielle Parton, has opened up about her own cancer diagnosis and an emotional conversation with her famous aunt just weeks before Dolly’s death. Danielle said she initially knew little about what the country music legend was going through, but Dolly’s deeply distressed reaction to her niece’s diagnosis left her wondering whether her aunt was facing a similar battle.
Earlier this month, Dolly Parton’s estate announced Danielle as its newest brand ambassador, highlighting her independence, determination and entrepreneurial spirit. The announcement has brought renewed attention to Danielle, who is now sharing a personal chapter of her life that unfolded alongside her aunt’s private health struggles.
Danielle Parton’s Cancer Diagnosis

During an October 22 interview with Extra, Danielle revealed that her cancer was diagnosed at stage zero and detected early. She also recalled informing Dolly about the diagnosis shortly before the singer died.
“I’m going through a little bit of a cancer battle myself right now,” Danielle said.
According to Danielle, the news deeply affected her aunt. At the time, she did not know the full extent of Dolly’s own health problems, although she understood that the singer was unwell.
Dolly’s emotional response made Danielle question whether there was more to her aunt’s situation than she realized.
“I didn’t know, like anybody else, what she was dealing with. I knew she was sick,” Danielle explained.
She remembered how devastated Dolly was to hear about her niece’s diagnosis. Danielle said she tried to reassure her aunt, explaining that she had wanted to share the news because she was undergoing a biopsy.
“And so she was just devastated that I was going through it,” Danielle recalled. “And I remember telling her, I’m like, ‘Look, you’ve gotta get it together. It ain’t that deep. I just wanted you to know ‘cause I was having a biopsy.’”
The conversation has taken on added significance in light of what Danielle later understood about her aunt’s health. However, she emphasized that she had not known the details of what Dolly was experiencing at the time.
Danielle’s New Role in Preserving Her Aunt’s Legacy
Danielle is the daughter of Dolly’s brother, Bobby Lee Parton, and Doris Maxine Noland. Her own life has taken several different paths, including a career as a commercial airline pilot and 20 years of military service.
After leaving the military, she turned her attention to entrepreneurship and founded Shine Girl, a moonshine distillery and retail destination in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
Her appointment as a brand ambassador for Dolly Parton’s estate marks another chapter in her connection to her aunt’s legacy. Danielle has expressed gratitude for the opportunity to help preserve Dolly’s story, while making clear that she intends to honor her aunt rather than attempt to replace her.
For Danielle, the role is deeply personal. Beyond Dolly’s extraordinary career as a singer and songwriter, she remembers a family member who cared deeply about the people around her and encouraged others to pursue their own dreams.
Her recent interview has offered a rare glimpse into their relationship, revealing how a conversation about Danielle’s own health unexpectedly raised questions about Dolly’s condition.
As Danielle continues navigating her cancer journey, her reflections provide a personal perspective on the family’s loss and the lasting influence Dolly had on those closest to her.
