During The X Factor Australia in 2016, a devoted Queen fan learned he wouldn’t be moving forward in the competition — but instead of simply walking away, fellow judge Guy Sebastian had one extraordinary idea. 🔥 He turned to Adam Lambert and asked if the Queen singer would perform a duet with the stunned contestant. “Get up there Adam!” Sebastian urged — and moments later, Lambert leapt onto the stage and launched into Queen’s “I Want To Break Free,” leaving the contestant and the audience completely stunned.

Adam Lambert has shared the stage with some of the biggest names in rock, but one of his most unforgettable TV moments came when he unexpectedly joined a nervous X Factor Australia contestant for a powerful rendition of Queen’s “I Want To Break Free.”

The heartwarming moment took place during the early audition rounds of The X Factor Australia in 2016, when Lambert was serving as one of the show’s judges.

Pointing out that the young singer was a huge Queen fan, Sebastian turned to Lambert and suggested that the two perform a duet.

“It’s not that often we get a huge Queen fan in a room with a Queen singer,” Guy said as Lambert laughed.

He then asked the contestant: “How would you like to do a little duet with Adam?”

The delighted singer immediately agreed.

“Get up there Adam!” Guy urged.

Moments later, Lambert jumped onto the stage and launched into Queen’s “I Want To Break Free,” leaving the contestant and the audience visibly stunned.

For Lambert, the moment carried an extra layer of significance. Just seven years earlier, he had been standing on the other side of the audition room himself — an unknown singer hoping to make it through American Idol.

During his 2009 American Idol audition, Lambert performed Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Although his theatrical style divided the judges, Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Kara DioGuardi ultimately agreed to send him through.

That decision would change Lambert’s life.

As he progressed through the competition, his extraordinary vocal ability attracted the attention of Queen themselves. Roger Taylor later revealed that the band had first heard about Lambert after a friend called him and told him about an incredible singer on American Idol.

Taylor said he checked Lambert out and was blown away by his performance of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love.”

Queen eventually flew to Los Angeles to perform with Lambert during the American Idol finale. The collaboration proved so successful that Lambert went on to officially join Queen as their touring lead vocalist in 2011.

By the time he surprised the X Factor Australia contestant in 2016, Lambert was no longer the nervous young performer waiting for judges to decide his future.

He was now the Queen singer standing on the other side of the audition stage — giving another aspiring artist a moment he would likely never forget.

And that is what made the surprise duet so special: for a few minutes, Lambert turned the tables on the talent-show experience that had once changed his life, giving a fellow Queen fan the chance to sing alongside the man who had inherited one of rock music’s most demanding vocal legacies.
