While working as a nurse on the ship back to New South Wales, Sarah befriends the wealthy and powerful Bligh family, who offer her a job at Inverness Hospital. Sarah initially believes she’s landed on her feet, but when she discovers a dark scandal at the heart of the Bligh family, her new life takes a sharp turn.
Marta has described A Place to Call Home as a show about “identity, feeling at home culturally” centre on a woman who is “seeking a silence, a peace, but it’s not possible”. She told Huffington Post: “It’s about a time that was bourgeoning in Australia, but also had a disrespectful, righteous, nasty strain running through it… it’s about how far we’ve come, and how far we have to go.”
