Princess Diana’s younger brother, Earl Spencer, is preparing to publish a deeply personal memoir about the late royal — promising to revisit some of the most defining and painful chapters of her life.

Titled Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, the book will explore Diana’s marriage to Charles, what Earl Spencer describes as “untruths” surrounding her story, and the circumstances surrounding her tragic death.

The memoir is due to be published globally next month, ahead of the 30th anniversary of Diana’s death.

Earl Spencer, whose full name is Charles Edward Maurice Spencer, has maintained a close bond with his older sister throughout their lives.

Diana died in a car crash in Paris in 1997, and now her brother says the approaching anniversary has prompted him to finally put his own memories and perspective on paper.

He explained that he had once again been receiving numerous requests for interviews about Diana, but the experience convinced him that writing his own account would be preferable to repeatedly seeing other versions of her story.

According to Earl Spencer, many of those accounts are based on claims he believes are untrue but have gradually become accepted as fact.

His stated purpose for the memoir is straightforward: to tell Diana’s story from the perspective of the brother who knew her closely.

He also intends the book to reflect the same approach he took during his famous eulogy at Diana’s funeral — speaking about her in an openly positive way.

A Tribute to the Woman Behind the Icon

Earl Spencer hopes the memoir will appeal not only to people who still remember Diana during her lifetime, but also to younger readers who were born too late to experience her global fame.

He wants them to come away with a clearer sense of the woman behind the public image: a distinctive personality marked by love, charisma and self-doubt, but also someone who embraced life and, in his view, left the world a better place despite dying so young.

That personal perspective is central to the book, which promises to examine Diana not simply as a royal figure, but as a beloved sister.

Remembering Diana’s Final Days

Diana died on August 31, 1997, following a car crash in the Pont de l’Alma road tunnel in Paris.

Her funeral took place six days later at Westminster Abbey and was broadcast on British television, drawing an audience of 32.1 million viewers.

Earl Spencer delivered an emotional eulogy that received a huge response from crowds both inside and outside the abbey.

During his speech, he pledged that Diana’s “blood family” would care for her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, so that their lives would not be overwhelmed by duty and tradition.

That moment became one of the most remembered parts of Diana’s funeral.

Earl Spencer’s Connection to the Royal Family

Born Charles Edward Maurice Spencer, Earl Spencer is Diana’s younger brother and the maternal uncle of Prince William and Prince Harry.

He inherited the Spencer title in 1992, becoming the ninth Earl Spencer.

His godmother was the late Queen Elizabeth II, while his parents were the Viscount and Viscountess Althorp.

His longstanding connection to Diana and the Spencer family gives the forthcoming memoir an unusually intimate perspective on one of the most famous women of the 20th century.

Publisher Calls the Memoir “Historically Important”

Publisher Daniel Bunyard has described the book as being of “historical importance,” while calling Diana one of the 20th century’s most iconic figures.

He emphasized that the memoir is particularly distinctive because it comes directly from Earl Spencer, whose relationship with Diana gave him an exceptionally close vantage point.

Bunyard also praised Spencer as a loving brother, acclaimed memoirist and celebrated historian, saying those different sides of his career and personality come together in Swan Song.

The publisher described the memoir as moving, candid and emotionally detailed, while noting that it contains revelations likely to attract considerable attention.

Ultimately, however, he said the book should be viewed as a lasting tribute to the woman remembered around the world as Princess Diana.
