Riley Green Gives Kayleigh Mathews His “Best Compliment” After Her Stunning Patsy Cline Cover on ‘The Voice’
Kayleigh Mathews brought a beloved country classic back to life on The Voice, earning some of the warmest praise of the night from her coach, Riley Green. Her heartfelt rendition of Patsy Cline’s “Walkin’ After Midnight” showcased a distinctive vocal style that impressed multiple coaches, with Green delivering what he called the highest compliment he could give a country singer.
But despite the glowing reactions, Kayleigh’s future in the competition is still uncertain. Following the show’s unprecedented first-ever Cut Week, she is among the contestants waiting to learn whether America will give her another chance to compete.
Kayleigh Mathews Takes on a Patsy Cline Classic

Monday’s episode, November 2, marked a major turning point in Season 30 of The Voice. For the first time in the show’s history, the competition introduced a Cut Week that reduced the field from 28 contestants to just 12 singers.
The remaining 16 eliminated contestants were then left hoping to earn one final opportunity. Viewers would choose just one singer to return, completing the Top 13 lineup ahead of the first live show on November 9.
Among those whose fate now rests with the audience is Kayleigh Mathews, a member of Team Riley.
The singer had already made a strong impression during the Blind Auditions, turning all four coaches’ chairs with her rendition of Vince Gill’s “When I Call Your Name.” Having established herself as a promising country vocalist, she needed another memorable performance to strengthen her position.
For Cut Week, Kayleigh went back to the roots of classic country, choosing Patsy Cline’s timeless hit “Walkin’ After Midnight.”
Her arrangement remained remarkably close to the instrumental style of Cline’s original 1957 recording. However, Kayleigh made the song distinctly her own through her vocal interpretation.
Patsy Cline was known for her rich contralto voice and the warmth she brought to the lower notes. Kayleigh approached the material differently, taking the melody into a higher register while preserving the song’s emotional storytelling.
The result caught the attention of her coach, Riley Green, who was particularly impressed by how naturally she embraced the country sound.
Riley Green Calls It His “Best Compliment”
Following the performance, Riley made it clear that Kayleigh had delivered exactly the kind of country music he appreciated.
“That was so country, and that’s the best compliment I can give.”
But his praise didn’t stop there. Green also highlighted the qualities that made her voice stand out, particularly her ability to introduce a bluesy character into certain notes.
“I love, too, that your voice is so unique and that you’ve got a bluesy kind of thing that you can do at the end of some notes.”
He then wrapped up his feedback with an enthusiastic endorsement:
“I just loved everything about it. You’re great.”
For Kayleigh, receiving such an enthusiastic response from a country artist and her own coach was a significant moment. Riley wasn’t simply praising her song selection; he was recognizing the distinctive qualities of her voice and the way she interpreted a classic.
Kelly Clarkson Praises Kayleigh’s Unique Vocal Style
Riley wasn’t the only coach impressed by Kayleigh’s performance.
Kelly Clarkson also singled out an unusual quality in the singer’s voice, particularly the distinctive resonance that gave her delivery its character.
“You have this beautiful, like, yodel thing that goes on in your resonance that’s so beautiful. You just have quite a gift, girl.”
Queen Latifah joined the positive reactions, although her attention turned to something other than Kayleigh’s vocals. She complimented the singer’s sparkly outfit, prompting a playful exchange between the coaches.
Clarkson jokingly suggested that she needed to see Riley Green wearing the same outfit.
Riley immediately played along, turning around and quipping, “Roll the footage,” as though he were about to present video evidence of himself wearing the sparkling ensemble.
Unfortunately, no such footage exists — at least for now.
The lighthearted moment offered a fun contrast to the emotional intensity of the competition, with Kayleigh receiving praise for both her musical ability and her stage presence.
Will Kayleigh Mathews Return for the Live Shows?
Despite earning compliments from Riley Green, Kelly Clarkson, and Queen Latifah, Kayleigh’s journey on The Voice is not yet secure.
Voting concluded during the early hours of Tuesday, November 3, leaving viewers waiting to discover which of the 16 eliminated contestants will receive the final opportunity to join the Top 13.
The results will be revealed during the next episode on Monday, November 9, when The Voice concludes its historic Cut Week and moves into the live-show stage.
For now, Kayleigh can take comfort in having delivered a performance that earned her coach’s highest praise. Whether that will be enough to bring her back remains to be seen.
