Legendary rock band Queen and Adam Lambert delivered a thunderous opening performance at the Oscars on Sunday, immediately turning Hollywood’s biggest night into a full-blown rock spectacle.
HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES — Adam Lambert joined Queen guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor onstage to perform the band’s iconic hit “We Will Rock You,” as a star-studded audience stomped, clapped and sang along to the unmistakable beat.
The electrifying performance then transitioned into the perfectly fitting “We Are the Champions,” prompting loud applause from acting nominees including Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga.
The opening number served as a tribute to “Bohemian Rhapsody,” the Oscar-nominated biographical film chronicling the life and career of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.
Across the theater, celebrities and nominees could be seen joining in with the songs as the performance built toward a spectacular finale, complete with a shimmering curtain of sparks cascading across the Oscars stage.
The high-energy celebration ended with a striking backdrop featuring footage of the late Freddie Mercury performing with Queen.
Among those visibly enjoying the moment was Rami Malek, who flashed a huge grin as the performance came to a close. Malek was nominated for Best Actor for his acclaimed portrayal of Mercury.
