‘The Voice’ Coaches Left Stunned as Two Contestants Deliver a Powerful Stevie Wonder Duet

A challenging Stevie Wonder classic pushed two The Voice contestants to their limits — and left the coaches struggling to decide who deserved to advance. In a sneak peek from Season 30, Brandon Diaz and Bryan James faced off with a performance of “As” so impressive that even their coach, Queen Latifah, admitted she had hoped one of them would make a mistake.

The Battle, featured ahead of Monday night’s episode, puts the two singers in a difficult position: one will move on to Cut Week, while the other will leave the competition.

With Season 30’s Battles continuing, coaches Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine, Queen Latifah and Riley Green are working to narrow their teams before the season’s newest stage, Cut Week.

For this matchup, Queen Latifah paired Brandon Diaz and Bryan James for a duet of Stevie Wonder’s “As.” The song demanded strong vocals, intricate harmonies and the ability to complement a partner without losing individual character.

The two contestants rose to the challenge, delivering an energetic performance that impressed all four coaches.

Riley Green compared their back-and-forth delivery to a heavyweight boxing match, praising how well the singers worked together despite their contrasting styles.

“Brandon, your voice’s got a punch,” Riley observed, pointing to the distinctive tone that helps his vocals cut through. Bryan, meanwhile, brought a warmer, more soothing sound. Although their voices were very different, Riley felt they blended remarkably well and appeared to enjoy performing together.

Kelly Clarkson was so impressed that she suggested the pair should consider becoming a duo.

“Both of your voices are sexy,” she remarked before jokingly apologizing to human resources for the comment. Adam Levine backed her up, arguing that there should be nothing wrong with describing a performance that way.

Kelly went on to say that either singer had the potential to succeed in the competition. Choosing between them, she explained, would feel like betraying one of the two vocalists after such a strong performance.

Adam initially promised to offer Queen Latifah more useful advice than Kelly had. Queen quickly reminded him that no one could make the decision for her.

Nevertheless, Adam tried to break down what each contestant had brought to the song.

He praised Brandon’s understanding of the material and the way his vocal tone suited the composition. Bryan, on the other hand, impressed him with his powerful high notes and the elements of Stevie Wonder’s distinctive style that came through in his performance.

Adam admitted that the outcome could depend on the day, suggesting that Brandon might have won the Battle while also acknowledging that Bryan could have exciting opportunities ahead.

Kelly playfully questioned how helpful that assessment really was.

Adam eventually offered a clearer preference, saying he would stick with Bryan because he had chosen him from the beginning.

Queen Latifah Calls the Performance “Fire”

The Real Reason Why Adam Levine Is Leaving 'The Voice' Season 28

When it was Queen Latifah’s turn to respond, she stood up and applauded both singers.

“God, that was fire,” she declared.

Queen explained that “As” was far from an easy song to perform. She had deliberately selected a challenging piece, hoping the contestants would have to work hard to master it. Instead, Brandon and Bryan exceeded her expectations.

She praised their harmonies and described the performance as unbelievable, using a series of playful food-related expressions to convey just how thoroughly the pair had tackled the song.

But their success created a problem for their coach.

Queen confessed that she had been hoping one of them would make a mistake, which might have made the decision easier. Instead, both delivered performances strong enough to leave her visibly torn.

“Did you not get the part where you’re supposed to mess up a little bit?” she joked, questioning why they had made her job so difficult.

Host Carson Daly stepped in, acknowledging that the choice appeared to be one of the toughest decisions of the night. He also reminded Queen that some Steals were still available.

Queen wondered aloud whether she could save both contestants, even asking whether she could steal someone from her own team.

Only One Contestant Can Advance

Despite Queen’s hopes of keeping both singers, the competition rules leave her with limited options.

Only two Steals remain: one belongs to Queen Latifah and the other to Adam Levine. Kelly Clarkson and Riley Green have already used theirs, and Queen cannot use her own Steal to rescue a contestant from her team.

That leaves Brandon Diaz and Bryan James facing an uncertain outcome after a performance that earned praise from every coach.

Viewers will have to tune in to Monday night’s episode to discover which singer wins the Battle and advances to Cut Week.

The Voice Season 30 airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC, with episodes available to stream the following day on Peacock.
