Prince Harry’s AI Warning in New York Takes an Unexpected Turn as Technical Glitch Forces Him Offstage

Prince Harry’s return to the American spotlight did not unfold quite as planned.

The Duke of Sussex appeared at the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting in New York City on Wednesday, Sept. 23, where he delivered a warning about the growing influence of artificial intelligence and technology on children and families.

But only minutes into his remarks, the very technology surrounding the event became part of the story.

Harry Returns to New York Weeks After UK Move

The appearance marked one of Harry’s first high-profile US engagements since he and Meghan Markle returned to Britain with their children for an extended period.

Taking the stage at the New York Hilton Midtown, the 42-year-old prince framed his concerns about technology through his experience as a parent to Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5.

“I come to this as a father,” Harry said, describing conversations he has had with parents grieving children whose lives, he argued, had been affected by irresponsibly designed technology.

Protecting children online is not a new issue for Harry. In 2024, he used the same forum to launch an Archewell Foundation initiative aimed at helping families affected by harmful experiences on social media. The Clinton Foundation’s own annual report documented that initiative.

Speech Suddenly Stops Seven Minutes In

As Harry criticized the power of major technology companies and turned his attention to AI, a technical problem abruptly interrupted his presentation.

Roughly seven minutes after taking the stage, Harry had to leave before finishing his remarks.

The interruption lasted far longer than a brief reset. About 40 minutes passed before the Duke was able to return and continue his speech.

When he finally reappeared, Harry acknowledged the irony.

“Hello again,” he told the audience before joking that AI had somehow found its way into his speech and apparently had concerns about what he planned to say next.

The lighthearted return contrasted with the much more serious message that followed.

Harry Warns AI Wants More Than Attention

Harry argued that artificial intelligence represents a new stage in the relationship between people and technology.

Social media, he said, became highly effective at capturing users’ attention. AI, in his view, could go considerably further by becoming something people form emotional attachments to and confide in.

He accused technology companies of building systems designed to draw users in, exploit their vulnerabilities and then shift responsibility for the consequences.

Harry also referred to AI as the “ultimate sycophant” and warned that its development was moving faster than researchers and society’s safeguards could keep pace.

His comments came during a week when AI safety and governance were receiving significant attention in New York. The subject was also on the agenda at the United Nations, amid broader debate over how rapidly increasingly capable AI systems should be developed and governed.

Children Remain at the Center of Harry’s Campaign

Toward the end of his remarks, Harry returned to the issue that has increasingly shaped his public work around technology: its potential impact on young people.

He displayed images of children while recalling families he had encountered through his advocacy, arguing that the number of parents dealing with the consequences of harmful digital experiences had continued to grow.

For Harry, the New York appearance was therefore more than a general warning about artificial intelligence. It was an extension of a campaign he has pursued for several years around children, social media and technology.

Yet the unexpected interruption created the most unusual moment of the appearance.

Harry had arrived in New York intending to warn an audience about technology’s growing power. Seven minutes later, a technology failure had temporarily taken the microphone away from him.
