The School-Run Incident That Prompted Harry and Meghan to Move Archie and Lilibet After Just Two Days

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision to move Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet out of their first British school came after a real-world school run exposed a security problem their team had not been able to fully anticipate.

Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, had only been attending the prep school for two days when their parents decided the daily journey was not workable from a security perspective. The issue was not the school itself, but the combination of heavy traffic, a lengthy commute and the difficulty of keeping the Sussex family’s vehicle together with the car carrying their private protection team.

The disruption comes shortly after Harry and Meghan returned to Britain with their children following years in California, putting the family’s long-running concerns over security back at the center of attention.

The crucial problem reportedly emerged when the family attempted the journey during an actual school morning.

Their security team had previously assessed the route, but those checks were carried out when schools were not operating normally. Once the new term began, hundreds of parents were traveling through the area at the same time.

On one journey, Harry and Meghan’s family vehicle approached the busy area around the school with their security personnel traveling behind them.

Traffic then separated the two vehicles.

Other cars moved between them while congestion brought traffic almost to a standstill, making it difficult for the protection team to maintain the convoy.

The concern went beyond a single frustrating commute. Security specialists also considered the amount of time the family could spend stationary in traffic, the repeated use of the same route each day and the distance between the Sussexes’ home and the school.

Those practical problems ultimately changed the family’s plans.

The timing made the decision particularly disruptive.

Archie and Lilibet had only recently begun their new school year after returning to Britain with their parents. Harry and Meghan had reportedly been pleased with the school, and there was no suggestion that concerns about its teaching or treatment of the children prompted the move.

A spokesperson for the couple said the decision followed discussions with their security team about the “practicalities” of the arrangements. The spokesperson also stressed that Harry and Meghan remained grateful to the teachers and staff and that the move should not be interpreted as criticism of the school.

After the problems became apparent, schools the couple had previously considered were reassessed.

Their security team examined an alternative school on Friday. Archie and Lilibet attended a trial day there on Monday before beginning their first full day on Tuesday, September 15.

Why Wasn’t the Problem Discovered Earlier?

The Sussexes’ protection team had carried out preparations before the school year began, but the circumstances of a normal school morning proved difficult to reproduce.

The family’s move back to Britain had also been confirmed relatively quickly. According to ITV News, places at the original school were finalized in August, leaving some of the logistical planning dependent on estimates of what traffic would look like once the term began.

The security team had driven the route and accounted for heavier term-time traffic, but it was only after school resumed that the full extent of the congestion became apparent.

By the end of the first day, the arrangement was already being reconsidered.

Harry and Meghan’s Security Is Being Reviewed Again

The school disruption has emerged at the same time as a wider reassessment of the Sussexes’ protection arrangements in Britain.

Harry has been informed that his security situation will receive a fresh official review following his return to live in the UK. Meghan is also expected to undergo a separate risk assessment.

The assessments are handled through the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures, known as RAVEC.

Harry and Meghan have been asked to provide information they consider relevant now that their circumstances have changed. Their children attending British schools and the family once again residing in the UK are among the significant differences from their previous situation.

However, the decision to conduct new assessments does not mean increased police protection has already been approved. It means their circumstances and potential risks are being reconsidered.

Private Security Has Limitations in Britain

Harry and Meghan currently pay for private protection.

In Britain, however, their private security personnel cannot carry firearms and do not have the same access to intelligence information available to state authorities, according to ITV News.

That distinction has been central to Harry’s long-running dispute over his family’s security arrangements since he and Meghan stepped away from working royal duties in 2020.

The school-run problem demonstrates how those concerns can affect an ordinary part of family life.

A route that appeared manageable during advance planning became significantly more complicated once hundreds of parents were on the road, the family vehicle became separated from its security car and traffic left both vehicles with limited freedom to move.

For Harry and Meghan, that was enough to reconsider a school their children had only just begun attending.

Archie and Lilibet are now settling into their replacement school, while the Sussexes await the outcome of their latest security assessments. The location of the family’s home and the children’s school has not been publicly disclosed.
