King Charles’s offer to support Meghan Markle just days before her royal wedding appeared straightforward: with her father unable to attend, the future King was prepared to escort his soon-to-be daughter-in-law down the aisle.

But according to royal author Robert Hardman, Meghan did not simply accept the offer as expected.

Instead, she reportedly proposed a compromise that allowed Charles to play an important role while preserving one particularly symbolic part of her entrance.

Charles Stepped In Before the Royal Wedding

Prince Harry and Meghan married on May 19, 2018, at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.

Only days before the ceremony, however, uncertainty surrounded who would accompany Meghan down the aisle after her father, Thomas Markle Sr., was unable to attend because of health concerns amid wider family tensions.

Charles offered to step in.

Harry later recalled that his father immediately agreed to help, telling him he would do whatever Meghan needed and would be there to support the couple.

Harry said he was “very grateful” that his father had taken on the role.

Meghan Reportedly Had a Different Idea

In Queen of Our Times, Hardman recounts that Charles’s offer received a response he apparently had not anticipated.

According to a friend cited by the author, Meghan replied: “Can we meet halfway?”

Rather than having Charles escort her for the entire procession, Meghan entered St George’s Chapel and walked the first portion of the aisle independently. Charles then joined her for the remainder of the walk toward the altar.

Hardman interpreted the decision as an early demonstration of Meghan’s confidence and independence, describing her as someone “determined to make a grand entrance on her own.”

That interpretation is the author’s characterization of the moment rather than a publicly stated explanation from Meghan herself.

Later in 2018, Harry discussed his father’s involvement during a documentary marking Charles’s 70th birthday.

Harry said he had personally asked Charles to accompany Meghan and believed his father knew the request was coming.

According to Harry, Charles immediately replied: “Yes, of course, I’ll do whatever Meghan needs, and I’m here to support you.”

For Harry, the gesture represented his father stepping forward at an important and complicated moment for the couple.

The Moment Takes on New Meaning Eight Years Later

The story has resurfaced as Harry and Meghan begin another chapter of their relationship with the Royal Family following their return to Britain.

Royal commentator Lynn Carratt has suggested that Charles’s cancer diagnosis may have contributed to Harry reconsidering how much time he has to repair strained family relationships. That remains her interpretation rather than a confirmed explanation from Harry or Meghan.

But the newly revisited account of their wedding offers a glimpse into a very different period between Charles and the Sussexes.

Days before Meghan officially joined the Royal Family, Charles was prepared to step into the place left empty by her father. Meghan reportedly accepted — but on one condition that ensured the first part of her journey down the aisle would be hers alone.
