WHAT IF HE WAS FIGHTING FOR ONE PERSON’S APPROVAL?
One of the easiest ways to explain Hayden’s actions in I Will Find You is to say that he did everything for his family.
After all, that is how he often seems to justify his choices.
He protects the family name.
He defends the people closest to him.
He clings to loyalty, even when it costs him everything.
But what if that explanation isn’t complete?
Perhaps Hayden wasn’t fighting for his family at all.
Perhaps he was fighting for something much smaller—and much more painful.
His mother’s approval.
Looking back through that lens, many of Hayden’s decisions begin to feel different. They no longer look like the actions of someone trying to save a family. Instead, they resemble the desperate efforts of a son trying to prove that he is worthy of being accepted by the person whose opinion has shaped his entire life.
That distinction matters.
Because people will sacrifice almost anything for an idea.
But they will sacrifice even more for love they believe they still have to earn.

One of the quiet tragedies in Hayden’s story is that the closer he gets to becoming the man he believes he is expected to be, the further he moves away from the person he might have become on his own.
He keeps winning battles that bring him no peace.
He keeps defending a legacy that never seems to love him back.
By the end of the story, it is difficult not to wonder whether Hayden ever knew the difference between love and approval.
Or whether he spent his entire life confusing the two.
That may be one of the saddest possibilities hidden inside I Will Find You.
Because if Hayden was never fighting for his family…
Then he may have spent his entire life fighting for something he was never truly going to receive.
