Adam Lambert and Melissa Etheridge joined forces for a standout performance at the 29th GLAAD Media Awards in New York City on Saturday, May 5, delivering a rocking duet of Etheridge’s “I’m the Only One.”

The pair performed the song from Etheridge’s landmark 1993 album Yes I Am, bringing two celebrated LGBTQ artists together on stage for an energetic rendition.

Speaking with Billboard about performing at an event attended primarily by an LGBTQ audience, Etheridge described the experience as one of freedom and comfort.

“We do most of our work in a straight world. The music industry is mainly straight,” Etheridge said. “I’m not afraid of a straight audience, but it’s a freedom to relax [at GLAAD]. It’s family. It’s like home.”

Lambert also reflected on how much the music industry has changed, particularly in terms of artists being able to express themselves openly.

“At one point in time to be a musician in mainstream music, you had to second-guess some things or be careful what you said,” he said. “It’s changing so rapidly, which is wonderful.”

For Lambert, performing at an event like the GLAAD Media Awards offered a chance to recognize that broader shift within the industry.

“At an event like this we can be reminded that things are shifting night and day in the music industry, even compared to 10 years ago,” he added.

The performance brought together two major voices for a celebration centered on LGBTQ visibility and representation in music.
