“It Was Just a Shock”: Dolly Parton’s Niece Reveals Why the Country Icon Kept Her Cancer Battle Private

Dolly Parton’s death came as a shock even to members of her own family who knew she had been facing health problems.

Dolly Parton's niece reveals rare detail about late country icon's private health battle

The country music legend died on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80 after a brief battle with cancer. Her family had deliberately kept the seriousness of her condition private, according to her niece Jada Star, who has now spoken publicly about the difficult days following her aunt’s death.

For fans around the world, the news marked the loss of one of country music’s most enduring figures. For her family, however, it meant saying goodbye to their matriarch.

Star, the daughter of Dolly’s younger sister Freida, described the experience as “really difficult and very surreal” in an interview with Extra.

At the same time, she said the enormous wave of love and tributes from fans had provided some comfort during an otherwise painful period.

“It’s been really difficult and very surreal. I think we all share that feeling. It’s also been really bittersweet because of this beautiful opportunity we’ve had to see how much the whole world loves her. So all of these tributes have helped so much to help us all through it.”

Why Dolly Kept Her Health Problems Private

Parton had experienced health issues before her death, but the public was not aware of the extent of her condition.

Her representatives confirmed only after her death that she had been battling cancer. The type of cancer was not disclosed.

According to Jada, keeping those health struggles out of the spotlight was intentional.

“She never wanted to worry anybody,” Star explained, adding that the family had kept the situation “real private.”

That decision helps explain why Dolly’s death was such a shock, even though her loved ones knew she had been unwell.

“I think it was just a shock on Tuesday,” Star said.

The country icon had continued working and remained involved with her projects, making the sudden reality of her death particularly difficult for those closest to her.

A Family Trying to Grieve

Star also recalled the way Parton approached her family during difficult moments.

According to her niece, Dolly encouraged them not to remain consumed by grief. She would tell them to dry their tears, get back to work and, above all, love one another.

“I can’t remember a life without her in it,” Star said during the interview.

The memories have clearly been difficult to discuss. At one point, Star became emotional while talking about her aunt and apologized as she struggled to continue.

Yet alongside the grief has been an extraordinary outpouring of affection from Dolly’s fans.

Tributes have appeared across the country and beyond, giving the family a powerful reminder of just how deeply Parton was loved. Star said that response had helped the family through the loss.

Jada Star Honors Her Aunt

Following Parton’s death, Star also took part in a tribute to her aunt at the Grand Ole Opry.

Although she admitted that performing onstage was not something she particularly enjoyed, she stepped forward for the occasion because it was important to honor Dolly.

Star said she hoped her aunt would have been proud.

She also recalled some of the advice Dolly had given her throughout her life, including a reminder not to spend too much time worrying about what other people think.

“Everything she taught me, I’ll use in everything I do,” Star said.

Star had previously appeared on the reality competition Claim to Fame, and she recalled seeking Dolly’s approval before taking part. Parton encouraged her to go ahead, while delivering the kind of practical advice that only Dolly could make memorable.

What Jada Would Say to Dolly Now

Asked what she would say if she had one more opportunity to speak with her aunt, Star became emotional.

Her answer was simple.

“I think I would just say thank you so much, and I love you so much, and I know you’re okay.”

Those words capture much of what Star has shared about her loss: deep sadness, gratitude and the belief that Dolly would want her family to continue living, working and loving one another.

A Legacy That Lives On

Dolly Parton leaves behind a seven-decade career that extended far beyond music. She became a singer, songwriter, actress, author and philanthropist whose influence reached generations of fans.

Her family is now facing the difficult task of moving forward without her, even as the rest of the world continues to celebrate the life she lived.

For Jada Star, the most important way to honor her aunt may be to carry forward what Dolly taught her.

And while the shock of losing such an important member of her family remains fresh, the love surrounding Dolly Parton has given those closest to her something to hold on to.

The woman may be gone, but the music, memories and lessons she left behind will continue to be part of the lives of the people who loved her.
