King Charles reportedly made one heartfelt request before his private summer reunion with Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and their children – that the family gathering remained exactly that: private.
The monarch is said to have insisted that no photographs or details of the meeting at Highgrove House were made public, despite it marking a rare opportunity for him to spend time with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
Buckingham Palace confirmed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had met the King and Queen during their visit, but released no further details.
According to Woman and Home’s Royal Editor Emily Andrews, the decision to keep the reunion under wraps came at the King’s request.
“There has been no briefing from either Team Sussex or Buckingham Palace on what took place at Highgrove over tea – and certainly no photographs,” she wrote.
“That will have been the King’s express request – that it should happen completely privately, and stay that way.”
Andrews suggested that maintaining the family’s privacy was key to preserving what she described as the “fragile trust” between the King and the Sussexes after years of public tensions.
Although Meghan shared photographs from the family’s European trip on social media, none included Archie or Lilibet with their grandfather.
The reported decision echoes an earlier family gathering during the late Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022.
According to Andrews, Prince Harry and Meghan had asked if they could bring a “trusted photographer” to capture Queen Elizabeth meeting Princess Lilibet for the first time.
The request was reportedly refused, and no images of the historic meeting were ever released.
This time, however, there have been no reports that the Sussexes sought permission for photographs, with Andrews suggesting they respected the King’s wishes in order to help rebuild family relations.
The reported reunion is seen as a significant step in the long-running rift between the Duke of Sussex and the Royal Family, although tensions are said to remain.
Andrews recently claimed that Prince William was unhappy about the meeting taking place.
“I understand that William believes the couple should not have been rewarded with a family meeting, however private, with the King,” she wrote.
She added that while the King had chosen to go ahead with the reunion, the Prince of Wales continues to shoulder an increasing share of royal duties.
The reported differences highlight the delicate balancing act facing the King as he seeks to maintain relationships with both of his sons.
Royal author Robert Jobson has previously claimed in The Windsor Legacy that trust between William and Harry was badly damaged following the Duke of Sussex’s public comments in 2021, including suggestions that his brother was “trapped” within the royal institution.
Jobson wrote that William “was furious”, adding that the brothers’ relationship had been left with “trust gone”.
While neither Buckingham Palace nor the Sussexes have commented on what was discussed during the Highgrove meeting, the absence of photographs or public details appears, according to royal commentators, to have been a deliberate effort to keep one of the family’s most significant reunions firmly behind closed doors.
