Prince Harry and Prince William’s relationship remains strained six years after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex left the UK for California – with a single three-letter word, ‘HRH’, continuing to fuel the royal rift

Tensions between Prince Harry and Prince William remain unresolved six years after Harry and Meghan Markle relocated to California from the UK – with a single three-letter word continuing to drive a wedge between them.
While the royal divide widened following the Sussexes’ televised interviews and Harry’s explosive memoir Spare, the rift deepened further after a subtle yet significant misstep by Meghan Markle.
The controversy revolves around the three letters “HRH”. The designation, which stands for “His/Her Royal Highness”, is exclusively reserved for senior working members of the royal family.
Under the terms of the landmark 2020 Sandringham Agreement, brokered with the late Queen Elizabeth II and the then Prince Charles, Harry and Meghan committed not to use their “HRH” titles actively after stepping down from royal duties. At the time, a statement on their website confirmed: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will not use their HRH titles as they are no longer working members of the Royal Family.”
The controversy erupted when entrepreneur Jamie Kern Lima, a close confidante of Meghan, posted an Instagram photo showing a gift basket filled with products from the Duchess’s brand.
The label on the package read: “HRH The Duchess of Sussex”, reports the Express.
While Meghan retains the title Duchess of Sussex, using “HRH” on a commercial product was widely interpreted as a clear violation of the Sandringham Agreement, prompting swift criticism on social media. Royal commentators have suggested the decision has muddied the waters between profit-making ventures and royal standing – precisely the situation the 2020 agreement was meant to avoid.
Speaking to Paris Match, royal expert Stéphane Bern noted: “These three letters have reignited tensions at the very heart of the monarchy.”

Sources also disclosed that the misstep left Prince William “deeply frustrated”. The Prince of Wales, 42, has consistently held that exploiting royal titles for business purposes is entirely inappropriate, making an already strained relationship even more difficult to mend.
Back in 2020, Princess Anne’s son Peter Phillips faced considerable criticism after appearing in a Chinese television advertisement for Bright Dairy promoting “Jersey Fresh Milk”. The commercial showcased an opulent country estate and a recreation of the royal state carriage, clearly marketing him as a “British Royal Family member” while a butler presented him with milk on a silver tray.
Observers swiftly condemned him for capitalizing on his royal connections for financial gain – precisely the conduct Prince William has consistently sought to prevent.
Though Buckingham Palace never issued an official statement, royal staff members were said to have taken the episode seriously. Harry and Meghan offered no direct commentary on the situation at the time, though their earlier position had been that they maintain the ability to use their titles provided they are not performing official royal duties.
