Prince Harry’s Eight-Word Remark Reveals How He Felt About Prince William

Prince Harry and Prince William may now be living in the same country again, but the brothers are still widely reported to be estranged, with little indication that their relationship has been repaired.

Harry and Meghan Markle returned to the UK with their two children, Archie and Lilibet, after spending years living in California. Yet the Duke of Sussex’s homecoming does not appear to have brought him any closer to his elder brother.

Recent reports continue to describe the relationship between the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Sussex as deeply strained, with no regular communication between them. Royal commentators have also suggested that William remains reluctant to pursue a reconciliation.

At the heart of the long-running dispute is a sense of unequal treatment that Harry has reportedly carried for years.

One eight-word remark attributed to him captures that feeling particularly clearly: “one rule for him and another for me.”

How the rift between the brothers grew

William and Harry were once regarded as an unusually close pair of royal brothers, but their relationship became increasingly difficult as Harry’s relationship with Meghan developed.

Tensions were already apparent before the couple married in 2018, according to claims detailed by royal editor and biographer Russell Myers in his book William & Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story.

Myers argues that the brothers’ problems cannot simply be attributed to Meghan, with issues between them reportedly stretching back further. He has also described William as deeply saddened by the deterioration of their relationship.

The situation became even more complicated when Harry and Meghan decided to step back as senior working royals in 2020 and eventually established a new life in California.

Since then, Harry has spoken openly about his experiences within the Royal Family in interviews, including his high-profile conversation with Oprah Winfrey, as well as in his memoir Spare.

The protection dispute that left Harry feeling unfairly treated

One of the episodes highlighted by Myers concerns Harry’s efforts to secure protection for Meghan before their wedding.

According to the account, Harry was deeply concerned about the attention and abuse directed towards his then-fiancée and wanted additional security measures to protect her.

However, he was reportedly told that royal protection could not be provided until after their marriage.

Harry is said to have been particularly frustrated because Catherine, then dating William, had received unofficial palace guidance and was given round-the-clock protection after becoming engaged to him.

That comparison reportedly left Harry feeling that the system had different standards for the two brothers.

As Myers recounts it, Harry’s reaction was essentially summed up by the thought: “one rule for him and another for me.”

King Charles, who was Prince Charles at the time, reportedly maintained that he could not intervene because decisions about government-funded protection were not within his control.

The dispute became another source of tension between Harry and the rest of the Royal Family.

Harry and Meghan’s new life back in Britain

After years away, Harry and Meghan have now returned to the UK with Archie and Lilibet.

The family is reportedly living at a non-royal residence outside London, while their children have begun attending school in Britain.

The move represents a major change after the couple spent years based in Montecito, California.

Meghan has also shared glimpses of the family’s life in Britain on social media, including footage of woodland walks, outdoor activities and time spent together as a family.

Harry, meanwhile, has continued supporting causes close to him. He returned to the UK for the WellChild Awards, an event that has remained particularly significant to him.

The couple’s return has inevitably renewed interest in Harry’s relationship with his royal relatives.

Harry’s relationship with King Charles appears different

Harry’s relationship with his father is reportedly in a better position than his relationship with William.

The Duke of Sussex has made several trips back to Britain and is understood to have re-established contact with King Charles.

The situation with William, however, remains considerably more difficult.

Recent reports have continued to describe the brothers as estranged, while Harry has reportedly expressed a desire for reconciliation. William, meanwhile, is said to remain focused on his own family and royal responsibilities rather than actively pursuing a reunion.

That contrast has made Harry’s return to Britain particularly intriguing. He is once again living close enough to his family for an encounter with William to be possible, but there has been no public sign that the brothers have overcome their differences.

From the “Fab Four” to a fractured relationship

The contrast with the early days of Harry and Meghan’s relationship is striking.

At one point, William, Catherine, Harry and Meghan were dubbed the “Fab Four” as the younger generation of the Royal Family appeared to be working together.

But tensions reportedly began to emerge around the time of Harry and Meghan’s 2018 wedding.

The brothers’ relationship deteriorated further after Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties and moved overseas.

According to Myers, Catherine was less inclined than William to try to persuade Harry and Meghan to remain within the royal system. William was reportedly “saddened” by the decision, while Catherine viewed the couple’s departure as something that had become increasingly difficult to prevent.

Myers has also suggested that the roots of the brothers’ problems extend beyond Meghan and involve the fundamentally different positions William and Harry occupied within the Royal Family as the future heir and his younger brother.

Will the brothers reconcile?

For now, there is no clear indication that William and Harry are ready to repair their relationship.

Harry’s return to Britain has placed him geographically closer to his brother, but physical proximity has not translated into reconciliation.

The years of disagreement, public revelations and competing accounts of what went wrong have created a rift that appears difficult to bridge.

And while Harry’s reported desire for a better relationship with his family remains a recurring theme, William has so far appeared more focused on his duties and immediate family.

For a pair of brothers who were once among the most recognizable faces of the younger generation of the monarchy, their continued distance remains one of the Royal Family’s most closely watched personal dramas.
