King Charles is working on repairing his relationship with Prince Harry, particularly after their recent “emotional” reunion during Harry’s visit to the UK. Royal insiders told RadarOnline that the encounter left both Charles and Harry “hopeful” about reconciliation.
Insiders also claimed to the outlet that Charles might even tolerate Harry more than Prince William. Although Charles and William have long been seen as a “united front,” their different approaches to royal duty have reportedly created tension between them.
Despite battling an undisclosed form of cancer, Charles has attended official engagements on 175 days over the past year. Meanwhile, William has made relatively few public appearances, choosing instead to spend time with his family on numerous vacations.
“There is a growing sense that the King feels the weight of the institution resting largely on his shoulders, particularly when he looks at how busy his own schedule has been compared with his heir’s,” a source told RadarOnline. “He is acutely conscious that he is still undertaking a substantial number of engagements while dealing with a serious illness, and that contrast has begun to grate behind the scenes.”
The insider noted that Charles sees William’s “desire to be a very present, hands‑on father” as a subtle critique of Charles’ own parenting. “He cannot entirely shake the feeling that this carefully crafted image inevitably invites comparisons with his own past, and that those comparisons do not always fall in his favor,” they added. “That touches on old sensitivities about the kind of parent he was able to be while balancing duty and personal life.”
“From the King’s perspective, there is a delicate balance to strike between updating the role for a modern era and appearing to step back from the responsibilities that give the monarchy its purpose,” the source continued. “When he sees that he is pushing through a demanding program of work, even as he manages treatment and recovery, while William’s public commitments sometimes look relatively light, it becomes more than just a scheduling issue – it starts to feel like a source of real tension.”
Royal biographer Tina Brown went as far as to suggest that Charles is growing increasingly irritated with William. “Somehow, William’s parenting dedication always seems couched as a tacit criticism of the king’s own paternal deficiencies.”
Brown also highlighted that, after “five confirmed family vacations in the past seven months,” William’s first week back in the UK included only two public outings: a father-daughter trip to a Women’s Rugby World Cup pool match and a visit to the Natural History Museum’s new gardens. Meanwhile, Charles, who revealed his cancer diagnosis in 2024, has continued to maintain a demanding work schedule.
Recent reports have suggested a “fractured” bond between William and Charles, with sources telling Page Six that they aren’t as close as they seem. “The problem with William is that he thinks he knows best,” royal biographer Hugo Vickers said, while royal writer Robert Jobson revealed that there’s longstanding tension between the father-son duo.
According to Jobson, “There have been differences of opinion and a few problems a couple of years back. William has to rise above it all if he’s going to be king, and both he and Charles know they have to work together. There’s a lot of decisions that Charles will make that will affect William.”
However, despite speculation of “eternal battles,” Charles and William remain “perfectly civil” and continue to “meet regularly.” Jobson even emphasized that there’s “no major problem” between them.
