The story behind “Coat of Many Colors”
“Coat of Many Colors” was inspired by Parton’s childhood growing up in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee.
One of 12 children, Parton was raised in a family that could not afford many of the things other children took for granted.
The song tells the story of a coat her mother made for her from scraps of fabric.
For Parton, however, the handmade coat represented something much more meaningful than its humble materials.
She remembered being teased at school by children who did not understand her family’s financial circumstances. While her classmates saw a coat made from pieces of fabric, Parton saw the love and care her mother had put into creating something specifically for her.

Six-String Soldiers pay tribute
Following Parton’s death, the Six-String Soldiers performed an acoustic version of “Coat of Many Colors” in her memory.
The group is a country and Americana ensemble made up of professional musicians serving in the U.S. Army. They are part of the U.S. Army Field Band, combining their military service with musical performances.
Introducing their tribute, the group reflected on Parton’s longstanding support for members of the military and their families.
“As our nation and people worldwide mourn the loss of the musical legend Dolly Parton, we remember and celebrate her decades of support for U.S. military service members and their families,” the group wrote.
They specifically highlighted Parton’s USO visit to Fort Hood during Operation Desert Storm, as well as her more recent involvement with the USO’s Military Virtual Programming series.
The performance gave a military ensemble the opportunity to honour an artist whose music had touched generations of listeners.
Dolly’s connection with military families
Parton’s relationship with the USO extended beyond a single appearance.
In December 2022, she participated in the USO’s Military Virtual Programming series, allowing deployed service members and their families to connect with her virtually.
The programme provided a way for Parton to reach military communities even when she could not be there in person.
