A Grandmother Said Her Heart Was Shattered After Losing Her Oldest Grandson During A Fourth Of July Celebration — But The Heartbreaking Mistake His Family Is Now Warning Every Parent About Could Save Another Child’s Life

A 4-year-old boy has died after being struck by fireworks during a July 4 celebration in Kentucky.

The child was identified as Rhett Luttrell, according to NBC affiliate WLEX, WKYT and the Lexington Herald Leader, citing the Pulaski County Coroner’s Office.

Rhett died in what was described as a “freak accident” after he was struck by fireworks at a home on Jacksboro Street on Saturday, July 4, according to the coroner’s office, the Lexington Herald Leader reported.

Deputy Coroner Matt Johnson told WLEX that the boy’s family was setting off a “cake-style fireworks box” when a tube of fireworks fell over and hit him around 10:16 p.m. local time.

Emergency responders received a call about a “fire emergency fireworks accident” involving the child, and Rhett was rushed to the hospital, where he later died, according to WLEX and WKYT.

He was pronounced dead at around 11 p.m. at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, the outlets reported. No other injuries were reported in the incident, the Lexington Herald Leader reported.

Johnson told the outlets that while he has responded to several fireworks accidents in his career, he had never seen a fatal one involving a child.

The Somerset Police Department is investigating the incident, the Lexington Herald Leader reported.

Rhett’s grandmother, Kim Lynn, described her grandson to WLEX and WKYT as her “pride and joy” and “an absolute angel.”

“He loved to go to the donut and coffee shop with his mommy, and loved to play dinosaurs with his daddy,” she told WLEX.

The boy’s father, Mikey Luttrell, also told the outlet that he and his wife “loved the child more than anything,” while other family members described him as a “fun-loving little boy.”

Funeral arrangements for Rhett have been set at Rominger Funeral Home in Manchester, Ky., according to WLEX.
