Hurry if you’d like to watch a “wonderful” biopic on avant-garde British artist Audrey Amiss, played by Sherwood star Monica Dolan, before Netflix removes it from its catalogue. Written and directed by Carol Morley, Typist Artist Pirate King looks back on the life of the misunderstood artist and is based on her artworks rediscovered after her death in 2013.
Also starring Line of Duty star Kelly Macdonald and Notting Hill‘s Gina McKee, the film fictionalises a trip Amiss takes with her psychiatric nurse Sandra (Macdonald), where they travel north to reconnect with people and places from the artist’s past.
The film, originally released in 2022, is currently available to watch on Netflix UK, though not for long.
The last day to catch Typist Artist Pirate King on the platform is 11 July. After that date, it remains available to buy and rent on digital retailers such as Amazon.
The hidden gem has a high critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, where it currently sits at a score of 94% out of 17 reviews.
Little White Lies called it Morley’s “wonderful new film” on “a subject who feels truly worthy of cinematic celebration”.
Branded “a warm, charming, and valuable film” by Fiction Machine, the biopic oozes “compassion” and is “tremendously” shot by Agnès Godard, according to The Guardian.
Elsewhere, The Skinny noted that the two lead performances “make the unexpected journey worthwhile”, while The Observer described the movie “disjointed” but also “humane” and “warm-hearted” and one “which takes a generous and accepting stance on Amiss’s rather abrasive character traits”.
