The Breaking Bad cast is “heartbroken” over the loss of costar RJ Mitte.
News broke on Monday that the actor, who starred as Walter White Jr. on the acclaimed series, died at the age of 34. Breaking Bad alums Aaron Paul and Dean Norris are among those to pay tribute to Mitte.
“I am at a loss,” Paul said in a statement provided to The Hollywood Reporter. “I am heartbroken over this news. RJ, I love you my friend. You will be missed. And to whoever happens to be reading this, please know you are loved, and you are not alone. Always remember that.”
Norris, who played Mitte’s onscreen uncle, wrote on social media, “Oh my God! Just found out about RJ. I am heartbroken. Though RJ didn’t play my TV son, I always looked out for him as a young kid on set. He was a sweetheart of a young man and will be greatly missed. This is so heartbreaking, I can’t believe it. Thinking of him and his family.”

“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of beloved actor, philanthropist, and passionate disability rights activist RJ Mitte,” Mitte’s representatives said in a statement on Monday. “At this time, we ask people to respect the privacy of RJ Mitte’s family and close ones.
Among the other celebrities to pay their respects to Mitte were Marlee Matlin and Lou Diamond Phillips. Matlin wrote, “My heart is shattered. There will never be another like RJ Mitte. You will always have a place in my heart. RIP.” And Phillips posted, “Absolutely heartbreaking. What a wonderful young man. My heart goes out to his family and friends.”
For six seasons, Mitte starred on Breaking Bad as Walter White Jr., a.k.a. Flynn, the son of chemistry teacher-turned-drug kingpin Walter White (Bryan Cranston). Mitte was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when he was 3 years old, and he tapped into that experience for his memorable performance.
“It wasn’t about creating a disabled character; it was about creating an able-bodied character,” Mitte told EW in 2018 when the Breaking Bad cast reunited. “As we evolve, our normality changes, and that’s what I was trying to create with Walt Jr. — a normality of life, of this individual.
“Initially, a network will take a disabled character and make him truly disabled, and say, ‘All right, that’s what we have to do,’” he continued. “We did the opposite. We created this experience and ended up having real characters, and that’s why I think the audience had so much gravity toward Breaking Bad. These weren’t contrived characters, there weren’t artificial characters, these weren’t just thrown together. They were thought-out and methodical, and that’s what makes them so real.”
Mitte used his platform to promote greater representation for people with disabilities, serving as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s, as well as the as president of The Mitte Foundation.
Last year, he got engaged to his girlfriend of five years, Kennedy Suarez, at a UCP fundraising gala.
“I’m thrilled to have found my person, my partner in life who makes me want to be better, no matter what we’re doing,” Mitte told us at the time. “Kennedy is my everything and I can’t wait to officially start our life together and see what adventures life takes us on next.”
