Hilary Knight stunned the arena in Milan when she dropped to one knee and proposed to fellow Team USA star Brittany Bowe. Their story reportedly began quietly during the isolated bubble of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics — masked walks, private conversations, and a connection that grew away from cameras. Four years later at Milano Cortina 2026, that once-private relationship unfolded in front of the world. The crowd’s reaction was instant. Teammates froze. Fans erupted. Even seasoned commentators struggled to find words. But what’s drawing even more attention now isn’t just the proposal itself — it’s the subtle detail hidden in Knight’s simple caption afterward. A few carefully chosen words that insiders say carry deeper meaning, turning this from a romantic gesture into something profoundly symbolic. An Olympic stage. A lifetime question. And a moment no medal could rival.

“Olympics brought us together. This one made us forever,” Knight reflected while announcing her happy news

Brittany Bowe and Hilary Knight are taking the next step in their relationship, and it’s happening as they compete in their second Olympics as a couple.

On Wednesday, Feb. 18, Knight, the 36-year-old captain of Team USA’s hockey team, proposed to her girlfriend, whom she fell in love with while competing in the 2022 Beijing Olympics.

In a post shared to Instagram, the hockey star commemorated the moment she got down on one knee to ask Bowe, a 37-year-old speed skater, to marry her.

The post included a clip of Knight presenting a ring box to Bowe, who appeared gleefully surprised. In a photo, the Olympian couple posed together with the skater showing off her new jewelry.

“Olympics brought us together,” Knight captioned the post, adding, “This one made us forever.”

Speaking to PEOPLE in January ahead of the 2026 Games, Bowe, a two-time bronze medalist, described her relationship with Knight as “the biggest win” to come out of her time in Beijing.

“Hilary and I have known each other for a number of years through different Team USA events, a number of different Olympics, but that’s the first time we really did have time to connect and get to know one another,” she recalled.

The start of their love story was “everything other than glamorous” as they were competing in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the restrictions, she said that it was “kind of cool” since they were “in a bubble” without any distractions.

“Hilary would ask, like, ‘Oh, do you want to go for a walk after dinner?’ And that was our first date, going to walk around the Olympic Village masked because everyone was so fearful of getting COVID,” she said.

Since returning to the United States after the 2022 Games — during which Bowe won her first personal and second overall bronze medal and Knight clinched her third silver medal with Team USA — the couple relocated and now live together in Salt Lake City.

The 2026 Games, held in Milan, Italy, mark Bowe’s fourth time competing and Knight’s fifth. This time around, Bowe told PEOPLE that they’d have loved ones cheering them on in the audience.

All About Brittany Bowe and Hilary Knight's Relationship

“I know both of our families are really excited to watch both of us compete,” she said. “My family’s already got their hockey tickets, and her family’s getting the speed skating tickets. So, just to have more people in the stands that love you, support you, are part of your journey — that will make it really special.”

This year, Bowe just missed claiming what would have been her second bronze medal in the women’s 1,000-meter race, finishing in fourth place. She won her first bronze medal in 2018 as a member of the women’s speed skating team.

After defeating Sweden, Knight is headed to the women’s hockey gold medal game, which takes place on Thursday, Feb, 19. This marks the captain’s chance to earn a second gold medal, her first since she helped lead the team to victory in 2018, according to her bio on the USA Hockey website.

Speaking to PEOPLE, she recognized the sacrifices that her parents made to help her achieve her lifelong Olympic dreams.

“The number of family events that I’ve missed, the countless hours of warming up the car so we can get in our pajamas and go learn how to skate early mornings before school, the tournaments, all the travel, and just the financial commitment. I mean, there’s so many things that they had to sacrifice for me to continue to be able to live my dream on this level,” she said.

Like her new fiancée, Knight was excited to have her family physically present at the games again, describing it as “really exciting.”
