Fans of family conflict dramas are in for a delight as a melodramatic South African production drawn from reality is climbing the Netflix rankings, with numerous viewers having already devoured the entire run.
The Polygamist, comprising 22 episodes, adapts a novel by Sue Nyathi, and the programme – sitting alongside popular titles such as Sweet Magnolias and Legends – explores themes of desire and retribution.
The compelling synopsis states: “Follow Jonasi Gomora, a self-made CEO and banker, whose carefully curated empire begins to unravel as his wife, secret second wife, mistress, and girlfriend fight for his life and wealth.”
Created for television by Akin Omotoso, the production drew inspiration from author Nyathi’s grandfather, who maintained five marriages.
Following the gripping conclusion, audiences are eager to discover whether a second series lies ahead.

Currently, Netflix has not commissioned the programme for a second run, though producer Thuli Zuma revealed she has already conceived plans for a follow-up.
The first series concluded with a dramatic revelation concerning Jonasi’s (Sdumo Mtshali) death, leaving fans anxious to learn what unfolds subsequently.
Discussing the prospect of another series with News 24, Zuma commented: “Where The Polygamist goes is up to Netflix. I mean, of course, we spend so much time investing in the story, having a great time telling it, loving it.
“We are super excited to watch it along with the rest of South Africa and the world, and I think there’s always a desire to see more.
“Even though you try to say, ‘Guys, there’s one season, we’re going to write our best season’, there’s always like, ‘Yeah, that would be great for season two!’ or ‘Ooh, can you imagine? But that would be a fourth-season thing’. We’ll wait to hear from Netflix.”

She acknowledged she would be keen to examine “the children’s lives growing up” in potential future episodes, stating: “After watching the series, if I were to write a sequel, I would certainly look at the children’s lives growing up in that setup.”
Viewers have flocked to IMDb reviews to express their reactions to the series, with one praising it as “incredible”, commenting: “One of the best series I have watched in a very long time. It has so many twists and turns and the best ending.”
Another described it as “a rollercoaster I never wanted to end”, writing: “Absolutely insane! I have never been able to watch a show without multitasking, but this one had me completely hooked from start to finish.
“I actually had to sit down and give it my full attention, which is something I can’t say about many shows these days.”
