Christopher Nolan’s new film, The Odyssey, has arrived in theaters — and its cast is every bit as epic as the story itself.
The Oscar-winning director has assembled Hollywood heavyweights, including Matt Damon, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway and Robert Pattinson, to take on some of the most iconic characters in Greek mythology.
Based on Homer’s poem, the blockbuster adaptation follows King Odysseus (Damon) as he embarks on a perilous, decade-long journey home after the Trojan War. The movie has already attracted rave reviews from critics, with Yahoo’s Brett Arnold calling it an “instant Oscar frontrunner.”
With so many familiar faces taking on legendary roles, it’s easy to lose track of who’s playing who. Here’s your guide to the major characters in The Odyssey and the stars bringing them to life.
Matt Damon as Odysseus

(Melinda Sue Gordon/Universal Pictures)
Damon leads the cast as Odysseus, the heroic king of Ithaca, whose struggle to return home after the Trojan War lies at the heart of the film. The actor, who previously worked with Nolan on Interstellar and Oppenheimer, said The Odyssey was “by far the hardest movie I’ve ever made.”
Tom Holland as Telemachus

(Melinda Sue Gordon/Universal Pictures)
Spider-Man star Tom Holland swaps the Marvel universe for Greek mythology as Telemachus, the son of Odysseus. Raised on stories of his father’s exploits, the prince embarks on a quest to find the missing king. Holland called the movie “an absolute masterpiece,” adding, “It’s unlike anything that I’ve ever seen before.”
Zendaya as Athena

(Melinda Sue Gordon/Universal Pictures)
Zendaya brings the goddess of wisdom to life. As Odysseus’s most powerful divine ally, Athena offers guidance and protection on his journey. The film marks Zendaya’s first collaboration with husband Tom Holland outside the Spider-Man franchise. Nolan hailed the Emmy winner for her “true grace and poise.”
Anne Hathaway as Penelope

(Melinda Sue Gordon/Universal Pictures)
Anne Hathaway stars as Penelope, the queen of Ithaca, whose faith in her husband never wavers. As Odysseus fights to return home, she’s left to fend off the suitors determined to take his place. Hathaway said she wanted to explore the character’s “fury and passion,” not her patience.
Robert Pattinson as Antinous

(Melinda Sue Gordon/Universal Pictures)
The Batman actor Robert Pattinson embraces the dark side as the villainous Antinous. As the most powerful of Penelope’s suitors, he’s determined to seize Odysseus’s throne and win the queen’s hand in marriage. The British actor based his performance on James Woods’s portrayal of a con man in the 1995 mob epic Casino.
