‘Heartstopper Forever’ Cast Reveals Final Cut Only Kept a Small Fraction of Filmed Intimate Scenes
In the newly released Netflix feature film, lead actors Kit Connor and Joe Locke opened up about their bold behind-the-scenes journey, while revealing the reasons why most of their sensitive scenes were cut from the official release.
Recently, Kit Connor and Joe Locke—the two stars playing the lead roles in Netflix’s feature-length film Heartstopper Forever—shared candid insights regarding the conclusion of the hit coming-of-age franchise. Appearing as guests on Brittany Broski’s online talk show Royal Court, the two actors revealed that the movie concluding the series underwent massive editing compared to what they actually shot on set.
A Shift Toward Mature Themes
The transition from the wholesome, sweet image of previous Heartstopper television seasons to more mature, realistic themes in the final film was an intentional choice by the production team. This direction aimed to reflect the natural growth and aging of the two lead characters, Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring. However, both Connor and Locke admitted that the sheer volume of intimate scenes they were required to perform exceeded their initial expectations.
According to Joe Locke, the intimate moments viewers see in the final movie represent only about “one-tenth” of the total footage they filmed before the cameras.
Recalling the intense and demanding production schedule, Kit Connor frankly shared, “We shot a lot of sex scenes.” Meanwhile, Joe Locke humorously joked that the unedited raw footage looked “no different than an adult film” because they spent a substantial amount of time shooting these sequences across numerous camera angles.
The two actors also detailed specific moments that were eliminated during editing, including a wide shot where both stars were fully nude on camera. Although the final broadcast version maintained the restraint and moderation needed to ensure artistic aesthetics, the actual filming process left a significant amount of sensitive material on the cutting room floor.

Notably, in this final chapter of the franchise, both Kit Connor and Joe Locke assumed new roles as Executive Producers. This professional expansion allowed the two young actors to directly participate in shaping the script and defining how the sex lives of the characters they played for years would be portrayed.
Locke emphasized that avoiding the sexual aspect at this stage would have been “very weird,” as the film wanted to shed the rose-tinted lens of early seasons to deliver a more authentic and honest picture of young queer experiences entering adulthood.
For his part, Connor noted that in their capacity as executive producers, their input carried more weight in artistic decisions. This helped ensure that even if the scenes took a step further than before, they still maintained the subtlety, standards, and genuine necessity required for the story’s narrative arc.
