Johnnie Kapua Faced a Major ‘The Voice’ Battle as His Wife Prepared to Welcome Their Third Child

Johnnie Kapua had more than a place in the next round of The Voice on his mind when he stepped into the Season 30 Battle Rounds. As he prepared for a crucial performance, his wife, Kat, was nearing her due date with their third child — a family milestone that made the competition feel less important than the life waiting for him at home.

The New Zealand-born singer-songwriter was competing on Team Kelly after coach Kelly Clarkson selected him using her First In button following his Blind Audition. His performance had impressed her with the strength of his voice, earning him a place on her team.

During rehearsals for the October 13 episode, Kapua shared the happy news with Clarkson and her team’s Battle Advisor, Ariana DeBose. As he prepared to face fellow contestant Anna McElroy, he explained that his wife was pregnant and their family was about to grow.

Kapua could barely contain his happiness as he spoke about the impending arrival.

“My wife is pregnant right now,” he told Clarkson with a smile.

Clarkson immediately celebrated the news, telling him, “Wow, life is a win for you regardless, that’s amazing.”

Kapua agreed, making it clear that his definition of success extended far beyond the competition.

“I’ve won already, 100%,” he replied.

Behind the scenes, however, the singer acknowledged that balancing the competition with the anticipation of becoming a father for the third time was a lot to manage.

“This is a big week. Not only do I have the Battles to prepare for, but my wife is due,” he told The Voice cameras.

He also explained why continuing in the competition mattered so much to him. Kat had signed him up for the show, and he wanted to make her proud by giving the performance everything he had.

“So this performance really boils down to, ‘Am I doing what it takes to make it through to the next round?’ I don’t want it to be wasted,” he said.

With his family supporting him throughout the experience, Kapua was determined to make the most of the opportunity, even as he recognized that he already had something far more meaningful waiting for him at home.

Kelly Clarkson Praises His Voice After the Battle

For their Battle Round, Kapua and McElroy performed “Some Things I’ll Never Know,” the song by Teddy Swims and Maren Morris.

Following their duet, Clarkson praised Kapua’s vocal ability, particularly the ease with which he reached the notes and the distinctive quality of his voice.

“The ease, Johnny, of your voice and the notes, it’s so effortless. It just wraps around you,” she told him.

She continued by highlighting the quality that had made him stand out throughout the competition.

“You have this special tone about you that I just fall in love with every time you open your mouth.”

Despite her admiration for his talent, Clarkson ultimately named McElroy the winner of the Battle, bringing Kapua’s Season 30 journey to an end.

However, the coach made it clear that his elimination would not mean the end of her support. She promised she was “down to help” his music career in “any and every way” she could.

Kapua remained smiling onstage as he thanked Clarkson for guiding him through the competition. Although he would not advance to the next round, his earlier words about already having won in life took on an especially meaningful significance.

Johnnie and Kat Kapua Welcome Their Third Child

The family’s happy news had already become reality several months before the episode aired.

On July 30, 2026, Kapua and his wife welcomed their third child, a baby boy named Kaitiaki Tuakana De Maria Kapua. Kat announced his arrival on Instagram, sharing a series of photographs of their newborn.

“Kaitiaki Tuakana De Maria Kapua finally arrived on July 30th at 6:11pm weighing 8lbs and 20 inches. Little piece of heaven in our home. And we couldn’t be happier,” she wrote.

The couple now has three children: daughter Kiki, son Kenai and their youngest, Kaitiaki.

Throughout Kapua’s time on The Voice, Kat has been one of his strongest supporters, regularly sharing social media posts documenting her husband’s journey as he pursued his musical ambitions.

His Family Has Been His Greatest Motivation

In an October 2026 interview with Woman’s Day, Kapua spoke about the encouragement he had received from his family throughout the competition.

One particularly meaningful moment came when his Blind Audition aired. His daughter was so proud of him that she expressed her admiration and showered him with kisses.

“When my [Blind Audition] aired, my daughter goes, ‘Dad, I’m so proud of you. You’re amazing.’ She kept giving me kisses,” he recalled.

For Kapua, that reaction was worth more than any result on the show.

“I’ve already won just by making her proud,” he said.

Although his time on The Voice Season 30 ended with the Battle Rounds, Kapua left the competition with his coach’s continued offer of support and the love of a family that had been cheering him on from the beginning. As he had made clear all along, advancing in the competition was never the only measure of success — and becoming a father for the third time gave him a reason to celebrate that no elimination could take away.
