Kacey Musgraves and Miranda Lambert Reunite for Surprise Duet in Texas After Years of Tension

Kacey Musgraves and Miranda Lambert have turned years of tension into a moment of musical reconciliation. The two country stars surprised fans at Musgraves’ Middle of Nowhere Tour stop in Austin, Texas, when Lambert joined her onstage at the Moody Center to perform their duet, “Horses and Divorces.”
The audience erupted as Musgraves welcomed Lambert to the stage. After sharing a hug, the pair performed their collaboration, bringing a once-strained relationship into the spotlight for a very different reason.
The reunion marked another chapter in a story that began years earlier, when a disagreement over a song contributed to a prolonged period of distance between the two singers.

The tension between Musgraves and Lambert dates back to “Mama’s Broken Heart,” a song Musgraves co-wrote and had hoped to record herself. The track was pitched to Lambert without Musgraves’ knowledge or consent, and Lambert went on to release it, creating friction between the two artists.
In the years that followed, they lost touch and did not consider themselves friends.
Their relationship began to change when Musgraves came across an Instagram post of Lambert riding one of her horses. The image sparked an unexpected idea: perhaps their shared experiences with horses and divorce could become the basis for a song.
“We’d lost touch for years and wouldn’t consider each other friends,” Musgraves told NPR in March 2026.
Recalling the moment of inspiration, she explained that she began thinking about their common ground and how it could translate into a humorous duet.
“Wait, that could be a really funny song. What if it’s a duet with her? What if I got her to write on it?” she recalled thinking.
Rather than letting their past disagreements stand in the way, Musgraves decided to contact Lambert and propose the collaboration.
Lambert was immediately receptive, responding, “Hell yeah, I’m in, let’s do it.”
The result was “Horses and Divorces,” a song that allowed the two singers to address their history with humor rather than continue holding on to old grievances.
Kacey Musgraves Hopes the Song Sends a Bigger Message
For Musgraves, the collaboration represents more than a new musical partnership. She sees it as an example of how people can move beyond disagreements by finding common ground and learning to laugh together.
Describing the song’s broader meaning, she said it was “a micro representation of what I wish that the world would do sometimes, just f**king sit down and poke fun at each other, have a beer and call it a day.”
The song gave the singers a way to acknowledge their complicated history while creating something together. Their surprise performance in Austin offered fans a chance to see that reconciliation take shape onstage.
Miranda Lambert on Women Supporting Women in Country Music

Lambert has also reflected on how her relationship with Musgraves changed over time, pointing to the importance of experience and perspective.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, she discussed the value of women in the music industry supporting one another instead of feeling they must compete for limited space.
“I do think that comes with some time, and age, that you realize that more,” Lambert said. “The fire calms down just a little bit. You’re like, ‘OK, we all proved our point. They hear us all. There’s room for us.’”
She also encouraged younger artists to adopt that outlook, acknowledging that neither she nor Musgraves could clearly remember what had originally kept them apart.
“And so I want to encourage all the younger artists to be the same way because Kacey and I, whatever our beef was, neither one of us really cares or knows what it was about anymore,” Lambert explained.
Looking back, she recognized that their difficult history had unexpectedly provided inspiration for the collaboration.
“You know what I mean? But it’s also good to have a muse so we could use it and create this song that’s badass and I love it.”
Their appearance together at the Moody Center demonstrated how a disagreement that once kept them at a distance had become the foundation for a shared musical moment. With “Horses and Divorces,” Musgraves and Lambert have found a way to turn an old conflict into a collaboration — and show that sometimes, making music together is a better way forward than holding on to the past.
