The Voice: Riley Green Makes a Tough Choice After Powerful Battle Between Joe Henley and Kenna Elpers
Rookie singer Joe Henley has earned a place on Riley Green’s team after delivering a standout performance on The Voice, beating the more experienced Kenna Elpers in the first Battle Round of Season 30.
The episode, which aired on Monday, October 12, marked a significant milestone for Green, who faced the difficult task of choosing which contestants would continue competing and which would have to leave his team.
Joe Henley and Kenna Elpers Take on a Riley Green and Ella Langley Hit

The first Battle for Team Riley brought Joe Henley and Kenna Elpers together for a performance of “Don’t Mind If I Do,” the duet recorded by Riley Green and Ella Langley and written by Green.
Although the pairing showed plenty of musical chemistry, the two singers arrived at the competition with very different levels of experience.
Henley, a 19-year-old from Alabama, surprised the coaches during his Blind Audition with his rendition of Travis Tritt’s “Anymore.” His performance earned chair turns from both Kelly Clarkson and Riley Green. The coaches were particularly astonished to discover that Henley had never performed before auditioning for the show.
Elpers, meanwhile, secured her place on Team Riley after singing Chris Stapleton’s “White Horse.” She chose Green as her coach over Queen Latifah and had already begun building her career as a singer in Nashville, including opening for Green.
Carly Pearce Helps Prepare the Singers
Ahead of their Battle, country singer Carly Pearce joined the rehearsals to offer guidance and help the contestants prepare.
With her advice, Henley and Elpers delivered a performance of “Don’t Mind If I Do” that impressed the coaches. Both singers brought their own strengths to the duet, but Henley’s natural vocal ability ultimately helped him stand out.
Kelly Clarkson made it clear that she had been interested in Henley from the beginning.
“Joe, I wanted you in the Blinds,” she said, noting that his voice had what she described as the “Randy Travis effect.”
She went on to praise the depth and presence of his vocals, explaining that his voice commanded attention regardless of the song he performed. In her view, that kind of quality could not be taught.
Adam Levine was equally impressed, describing Henley as having one of his favourite voices in the competition. He also highlighted the singer’s distinctive sound, saying it was the kind of voice listeners could recognise immediately when it came on the radio.
Riley Green Chooses the Inexperienced Singer

Following the performance, the decision came down to Green, who had to choose one contestant to advance.
Despite Elpers’s greater experience, Green decided to keep Henley on Team Riley, ending Elpers’s journey on the show.
The praise continued even after the stage had been cleared. Levine turned to Green and remarked, “He’s so good, that kid.”
Queen Latifah was similarly enthusiastic, declaring, “He’s got THE voice.”
The coaches’ reactions underlined just how strongly Henley’s performance had resonated with them, particularly given his lack of previous performing experience.
Could Joe Henley Be a Season 30 Favourite?
The Battle quickly sparked discussion among The Voice viewers on social media. Many praised Henley’s performance, with some predicting that the young Alabama singer could go all the way and win Season 30.
His journey is especially notable because he entered the competition without any previous performance experience, yet has already demonstrated the kind of vocal quality that caught the coaches’ attention during his Blind Audition.
Whether Henley can maintain that momentum in the rounds ahead remains to be seen, but his first Battle has given Team Riley a promising contestant to watch.
