ANDREW GARFIELD OPENS UP ABOUT ONSCREEN CHEMISTRY WITH FLORENCE PUGH IN ROMANTIC DRAMA ‘WE LIVE IN TIME’
Appearing on Good Morning America, Academy Award nominee Andrew Garfield reflected on the deeply collaborative dynamic he forged with Florence Pugh during production of director John Crowleyβs romantic drama, We Live in Time.
Fostering a Culture of Trust and Vulnerability

The Spider-Man alum praised the Black Widow star for creating a judgment-free atmosphere on set, underscoring that authentic emotional chemistry requires deliberate cultivation rather than spontaneous chance:
βSafe is the word. Safe and trusting, and ‘cultivating’ is a great word too, because it takes work. It’s not something that you can just leave to the gods. I think you have to really intentionally make sure these two have to be really safe with each other — safe to fail, safe to look foolish and safe to have all of your nooks and crannies seen in all the ways, and it was cultivated. I understood very, very quickly within rehearsals, and maybe the first few days of filming, that I was very, very safe with Florence.β
A Decade-Spanning Chronicle of Love and Mortality
Framed as a moving, non-linear romance, the narrative charts the serendipitous collision of strangers Tobias (Garfield) and Almut (Pugh). As they navigate domestic intimacy, child-rearing, and a life-altering medical truth that threatens their family’s foundation, the couple learns to cherish each precious fragment of their shared journey under severe temporal constraints.
Garfield noted the poignant screenplay resonated directly with his personal reflections on human existence:
βThe script seemed to be very much in line with the things I was ruminating on and considering in my life: love, partnership, connection, loss, risk, meaning, courage, sorrow, grief, and joy. You can only go as high as you go deep. And the script just kind of felt like the inside of my heart and my brain.β
