The trio performed Miranda Lambert’s “Mama’s Broken Heart” during Episode 6 on Tuesday, October 6, bringing three distinctly strong country voices together for one of the round’s more closely matched battles.

Three Country Voices, One Spot

Coach Reba McEntire paired Neelly with Ferryn and Brinkley, whose voices were considered a natural fit for pure country music.

The contestants also received guidance from Battle Advisor Carly Pearce, the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, as they prepared for their performance.

After watching the team rehearse, Pearce told McEntire that what the three singers had created was “pretty special” and that they simply needed to sell the performance when they took the stage.

That proved to be the challenge: all three singers brought qualities that made the decision difficult.

The Coaches Weighed In

Following the performance, the Coaches praised Neelly while also highlighting the connection between the Wright sisters.

Kelly Clarkson told Neelly, “Man, Brandy, it’s hard to compete…but you shine through!” Before McEntire made her decision, Clarkson said she would lean slightly toward Ferryn and Brinkley.

Queen Latifah also recognized Neelly’s strength, telling her, “Brandy, you got some fire.” She praised Ferryn and Brinkley as well, describing the sisters as being “locked in” together like “Legos.”

McEntire acknowledged that the sisters’ family connection gave them an advantage, but she also had a personal reason to appreciate Neelly’s presence on her team.

“Brandy, you did make me a cake!” McEntire noted.
