PRINCE Harry will not stay at Buckingham Palace during his return to the UK, despite reports.
The Duke of Sussex, 41, is due to arrive in the capital today for a long-awaited visit to his homeland.
Amid security concerns raised by the Sussexes, it is understood that the monarch had made available a royal home to Harry, Meghan and the children.
Charles reportedly offered up space in Buckingham Palace for the family to stay in – which would have come with existing security.
Harry is understood to have spent time organising security arrangements for his family before accepting the King’s offer.
A spokesperson for the Duke said that once those arrangements were in place Harry reached out to accept the offer of accommodation for himself.
The King’s offer has since been rescinded however, with a palace source saying the Duke had failed to accept Charles’ invitation in time, despite reports to the contrary.
It is understood that Harry failed to provide appropriate notice to the palace – leading to the invitation being withdrawn.
Harry also reportedly declared the accommodation unsuitable before officially turning down the King’s offer to house his family.
He then later requested to stay at the palace himself, without Meghan and the kids, palace sources said.
It is understood this request was declined as the provisions required to host him were no longer available.
Sources said that accommodation at a royal residence would be offered to Harry and his family for any future visits to the UK.
A spokesperson for Harry had earlier briefed that he would be staying at the palace and said it was “disappointing” that the offer has now been withdrawn.
They added that it was “unclear” why the offer had been taken back after being “accepted” by Harry.
Palace sources said that Harry’s request to stay at Buckingham Palace alone was made past the appropriate deadline.
Security concerns left it unclear if Meghan, 44, Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, would join Harry in the UK this week.
Harry and Meghan previously confirmed that their children would not be coming to London after it was revealed the Sussexes had lost a bid for official taxpayer-funded security.
According to a source Harry was “still looking at options” to make the visit work “in some form”, with it unclear if the rest of his family will join him later in the trip.
Harry previously said it was “impossible” to bring his family to the UK and that it is “sad” that he won’t be able to show his children his homeland.
This came after he lost his lengthy High Court battle last year for taxpayer-funded armed bodyguards in the wake of Megxit.
Harry had planned to take his children to Althorp, in Northants, for a visit to the final resting place of his late mother, Princess Diana – a plan which is now in doubt.
Royal Household sources last week told The Sun they were “weary” and “wary” about the ever-changing plans for Harry and his family’s return.
It remains unclear if Harry’s family will join him later this week, with Archie and Lilibet not coming to the capital.
Plans for the pair to meet the King for the first time in four years now seem unlikely.
Meghan may still attend the one-year out Invictus Games bash at Birmingham’s NEC at the end of the week however.
