Five years before becoming world-renowned disco sensations with “Staying Alive,” “Night Fever,” and “How Deep Is Your Love,” an early-era Bee Gees performed an unprecedented live medley on the US late-night music show, The Midnight Special, that’s still wowing pop fans to this day.
The Bee Gees, who had just released their 1973 studio album “Life In A Tin Can,” decided to ditch their own tracks for this TV performance and shock their audience with a string of five cover songs from one of the greatest UK rock bands in history.

The Bee Gees pay the ultimate tribute to their pop-rock predecessors, The Beatles; a band that had split just three years before this set and, thanks to this surprise performance from the Gibb brothers, were just beginning to step into their legendary status within music history.
But rather than cover the likes of “Penny Lane,” “Come Together,” or “Love Me Do,” The Bee Gees packed their medley with some of The Beatles’ lesser-known cuts instead, opting for “If I Fell,” “I Need You,” “I’ll Be Back,” and “This Boy” before wrapping up with just one all-out hit, “She Loves You.”
It’s likely one of the earliest Beatles tributes out there, but it wouldn’t be the last time The Bee Gees would cover this band. In 1978, the Bee Gees scored roles in the controversial Beatles-inspired comedy flick, “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” which saw the Gibb brothers re-record a selection of Beatles hits alongside artists such as Aerosmith and Earth, Wind & Fire.
However, when it comes to their Midnight Special set, The Bee Gees are still managing to surmount expectations, their medley continuing to shine bright amongst what is now five decades’ worth of Beatles covers and tribute sets.
