Céline Dion Breaks Down in Tears Seconds Into First Full Concert in More Than Six Years

Céline Dion’s long-awaited return to a full concert stage became emotional almost immediately, as the singer fought back tears just seconds into the opening song of her new Paris residency.

The 58-year-old superstar performed at Plenitude Arena in Nanterre, France, on Saturday, Sept. 12, marking her first complete concert in more than six years and the opening night of a planned 26-show residency.

Dion began the evening with her 1998 song “On Ne Change Pas,” but only moments into the performance, emotion appeared to overwhelm her.

She briefly stopped, wiped tears from her eyes and placed a hand over her chest before bringing her hands together in a gesture of gratitude toward the audience.

After composing herself, Dion finished the song and continued with “Destin.”

‘I made a promise to come back’

The singer later addressed the crowd in both French and English, acknowledging fans who had traveled from around the world to witness her return.

“There are many of you here tonight from all over the world,” Dion told the audience. “Thank you so very much for coming.”

She then reflected on the promise that had brought her back to the stage.

“I made a promise. I made a promise to come back, to be back on stage,” Dion said. “So here I am, singing for you and singing for me, singing life!”

Dion also thanked fans for standing by her throughout the difficult years away.

“Thank you so very much for your support, your patience,” she said, before referencing the title of her 1996 hit “Because You Loved Me” and moving into the song.

A six-year journey back to a full concert

“I made a promise. I made a promise to come back, to be back on stage,” Dion continued. “So here I am, singing for you and singing for me, singing life!”

Dion’s previous full concert took place in March 2020 at the Prudential Center in New Jersey.

The COVID-19 pandemic initially halted the remaining dates on her tour. Her return was subsequently complicated by serious health problems, and in 2022, Dion publicly revealed that she had been diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome.

The rare autoimmune and neurological disorder can cause symptoms including muscle rigidity, painful spasms, mobility difficulties and shortness of breath.

Although Dion has performed publicly since revealing her diagnosis, those appearances were very different from Saturday’s full-length concert.

She made a celebrated return at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics, performing at the Eiffel Tower. Later that year, she also appeared at the 1001 Seasons of Elie Saab fashion show in Saudi Arabia.

But the Sept. 12 performance represented a much bigger milestone: her first complete concert since 2020.

An intensive effort to return

Dion has been open about the work required to prepare herself for the Paris residency.

In an August 2026 interview with Harper’s Bazaar, the singer said her preparation included new medication as well as physical therapy, vocal therapy and immunotherapy.

Her routine also included Pilates three times a week and ballet classes.

For Dion, however, returning was about more than proving she could perform again. She described the residency as a way to reconnect with the fans she had missed during her prolonged absence.

“It’s been so long, I would like to offer them something to show how I’ve missed them,” she said.

That sentiment was evident from the opening seconds of Saturday’s concert.

After years of uncertainty surrounding her ability to perform live, Dion finally stood before a full concert audience again — and before she could even make it through her first song, the significance of that moment brought her to tears.
