King Charles Steps In to Help Harry’s Invictus Games After Uganda’s Sudden Withdrawal

Prince Harry has spent years building the Invictus Games as one of the defining projects of his life outside the working Royal Family. But when Uganda abruptly pulled out of the 2027 competition, the intervention that helped bring the country back did not come from Harry himself.

It came through King Charles’s most senior aide.

Uganda has now reversed its withdrawal after the King’s principal private secretary, Sir Clive Alderton, spoke directly with the country’s military chief and clarified that Charles had no objection to Uganda competing.

Uganda Suddenly Pulled Out of Harry’s Games

The controversy began after Buckingham Palace formally reiterated that Harry and Meghan remain non-working royals.

Soon afterward, Uganda’s military chief, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, announced that his country would withdraw from the Invictus Games, saying he did not want Uganda’s participation to be interpreted as opposing King Charles.

Kainerugaba said Uganda would not participate in something that did not have the King’s approval.

The development was particularly significant because Harry had personally announced Uganda’s addition to the Invictus community earlier this year.

Then the King’s Office Became Involved

The situation changed following a conversation between Kainerugaba and Sir Clive Alderton, the King’s principal private secretary.

According to the Uganda People’s Defence Force, Alderton made Charles’s position clear: the King had “no problem” with Uganda participating and encouraged the country to continue preparing for the Games.

Uganda subsequently reversed its decision and reinstated its team for the 2027 competition in Birmingham.

The Invictus Games Foundation welcomed Uganda’s return.

A Complicated Moment for Harry

The intervention creates an unusual contrast for the Duke of Sussex.

Harry and Meghan stepped away from working royal life in 2020, and Buckingham Palace recently reaffirmed that their charitable activities are undertaken independently rather than on behalf of the Crown.

Yet when confusion surrounding that distinction threatened Uganda’s participation in Harry’s signature project, reassurance from the King’s office helped resolve the dispute.

That does not establish that Harry was incapable of resolving the matter himself, nor does it demonstrate that Charles has “humiliated” his son. What the episode does show is that Uganda’s military leadership placed significant importance on knowing whether King Charles supported its participation.

Charles’s Intervention Also Sends Another Message

The development can also be read as evidence that the King was willing to support an initiative closely associated with his son despite their well-documented differences.

Harry founded the Invictus Games in 2014 to provide an international sporting competition for wounded, injured and sick military personnel and veterans.

He remains closely associated with the organization and appeared at the inaugural Invictus Spirit Awards in London on Thursday, his first major public appearance since returning to live in Britain.

The 2027 Invictus Games are scheduled to take place in Birmingham.

And after several days of uncertainty, Uganda is once again preparing to be there — following a clarification delivered from the office of the very institution Harry left behind.
