King Charles’ Private Reaction to Diana’s Death Revealed in Account From Inside Balmoral

Long before the world awoke to the news that Princess Diana had died, a deeply private scene was reportedly unfolding behind the walls of Balmoral Castle.

According to an account cited in Christopher Andersen’s biography The King: The Life of Charles III, the then-Prince Charles had initially been told that Diana was seriously injured following the Paris car crash on August 31, 1997. At one stage, reports even suggested she had survived.

The reality, however, was far worse.

The Call That Changed Everything

Diana had been taken to Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital after the Mercedes carrying her crashed inside the Pont de l’Alma tunnel. Dodi Fayed and driver Henri Paul were also killed in the collision.

As updates reached Balmoral through the night, Charles reportedly remained unaware that Diana’s condition had become fatal.

According to Andersen’s account, Sir Robert Fellowes — Queen Elizabeth II’s private secretary and the husband of Diana’s sister Jane — eventually received confirmation of Diana’s death from a British embassy official in Paris.

The official reportedly remained on the telephone while Fellowes delivered the news to Charles.

What followed, according to witnesses cited in the account, was impossible to forget.

A Cry Heard Through Balmoral

The embassy official reportedly remembered hearing Charles give a spontaneous “cry of pain” after being told Diana was dead.

Another witness characterized the sound as a “howl of anguish.”

The reaction was reportedly loud enough to be heard elsewhere in Balmoral. Staff rushed toward Charles’ room and, according to the biography, found him collapsed in an armchair and crying uncontrollably.

Diana and Charles had divorced the previous year after the breakdown of their marriage, but her death meant their sons, William and Harry, had suddenly lost their mother.

Charles now faced another painful task.

William and Harry Still Hadn’t Been Told

According to the account, those at Balmoral discussed whether William and Harry should immediately be awakened and told what had happened.

Charles ultimately agreed that they should be allowed to sleep until morning.

He was reportedly seen walking around the Balmoral estate before returning to the castle.

When the time came to speak to William, the biography says Charles entered his bedroom visibly distressed and sat on the edge of his son’s bed.

He first told William there had been a “terrible accident in Paris” before explaining that Diana had died. Harry was informed shortly afterward.
