A Massachusetts father has been convicted of sexually abusing a 17-year-old girl aboard a JetBlue flight to Boston, despite travelling with his wife and four children.
Jonathan Alan Lefman, 48, was found guilty following a three-day jury trial over the incident, which took place on August 30, 2024, during a flight from Puerto Rico to Boston, the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts announced on Thursday.
According to prosecutors, Lefman repeatedly reached between the back and bottom of the seat in front of him to touch the teenage passenger’s buttocks without her consent. At the time, he was seated beside his then-16-year-old son.
The conviction was announced on October 16, 2026, bringing the case closer to sentencing.

Teen Passenger Captured Evidence on Camera
The girl reportedly noticed something was wrong after seeing a reflection of Lefman leaning between the seats on the seatback monitor in front of her.
Officials said she managed to take a photograph showing his fingers protruding between the back and bottom of her seat, documenting the alleged conduct.
Lefman was travelling with his wife and four children, according to an affidavit supporting an application for a criminal complaint. His then-16-year-old son was sitting to his left while the incidents occurred.
After the flight landed, an adult female relative of the girl, who had been seated in a different row, confronted Lefman about his behaviour.
The woman then reported the incident to a JetBlue supervisor and presented video evidence showing his fingers between the seats.

Lefman Told Investigators He Had Been Stretching
Lefman, who lives in Newton, Massachusetts, reportedly claimed that he had been stretching when confronted about the incident.
When investigators asked whether the fingers captured on camera looked familiar to him, he responded, “Not really, no.”
The case proceeded to trial, where a jury found him guilty of one count of abusive sexual contact within the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States.
Lefman, who lives in a home valued at $2.3 million, is scheduled to be sentenced on January 12, 2027.
He faces a maximum of two years in prison, between five years and life of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000.
Officials Praise Verdict and Victim’s Courage
US Attorney Leah B. Foley condemned the conduct in a statement following the verdict, stressing that passengers should be able to travel without fear of sexual abuse.
“The defendant repeatedly sexually abused a minor who was simply trying to travel safely aboard a commercial flight,” Foley said.
She added: “No one should have to fear being sexually assaulted, whether in the air or on the ground. Today’s verdict holds the defendant accountable for his disturbing conduct and sends a clear message that those who prey on vulnerable passengers will face justice.”
Ted E. Docks, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Boston Division, also welcomed the jury’s decision and praised the teenager for coming forward.
“This verdict delivers justice for a young teen who showed remarkable courage following an appalling act. No one should ever be subjected to such harmful and predatory conduct—least of all in a confined, public space where she was entitled to feel safe,” Docks said.
He added that the FBI remained committed to protecting children and ensuring that people who exploit or abuse them are brought to justice.
The conviction follows a case in which the young passenger was able to document evidence during the flight and report what happened after landing. Lefman now faces sentencing in January, when the court will determine his punishment.
