At least five people were killed and five others injured after an Amazon Prime Air cargo plane overran a runway at Miami International Airport and crashed near a roadway Sunday afternoon, sending flames and thick black smoke into the sky.
The Boeing 767-300, operating as 21 Air Flight 7598, had departed Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, before landing at Miami shortly before 2 p.m. on September 6. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the aircraft overran Runway 30 after landing.
The aircraft ultimately came to rest beside a roadway near the airport. Dramatic footage from the scene showed the huge cargo jet engulfed in fire as emergency crews rushed toward the wreckage.
Five People Killed, Five Taken to Hospital
Miami-Dade authorities confirmed that five people died in the crash, while five others were transported to hospitals.
Three of the injured were reported to be in critical condition, while the other two suffered less severe injuries. NBC 6 reported that the aircraft’s two pilots were among those taken to hospital, along with three other injured people.
Authorities have not yet released details about the identities of those killed or clarified how the fatalities were divided between people aboard the aircraft and people on the ground.
The crash occurred with enough force to send the plane beyond the runway and toward a nearby roadway, where officials said multiple vehicles were struck.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue deployed approximately 60 units to the scene. Responders arrived to find the aircraft on fire with heavy flames and smoke, while crews worked to assess and treat victims.

Terrifying Scenes as Smoke Covered the Airport
Video recorded by witnesses showed the enormous aircraft surrounded by flames, with dense black smoke rising above the airport.
In one clip, people watching the unfolding disaster could be heard reacting in shock as the wreck burned. Emergency personnel were seen moving through the area and directing members of the public away from the crash site.
Despite the severity of the fire, images from the scene showed that much of the Boeing 767 remained recognizable and largely intact. The aircraft appeared to have come to rest on its belly beside the roadway, near several semi-trucks.
It was not immediately clear whether the nearby trucks were among the vehicles struck by the aircraft.
Miami Airport Operations Disrupted
The crash triggered an immediate ground stop at Miami International Airport, with airport officials temporarily closing all runways as emergency crews responded.
More than three hours after the crash, two of the airport’s four runways had reopened, according to NBC 6.
The disruption came as investigators and emergency personnel continued working at the crash site and authorities began the process of determining exactly what happened during the aircraft’s landing.

FAA and NTSB Launch Investigation
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that Flight 7598 overran the runway after landing at Miami at approximately 2 p.m. Sunday.
The agency identified the aircraft as a Boeing 767-300 cargo plane and said it had departed San Juan. The FAA is investigating, while the National Transportation Safety Board is sending a team to Miami to investigate the crash.
The cause of the runway overrun remains unknown.
Investigators will examine the aircraft, flight data, weather conditions, runway conditions, communications and the crew’s actions as they work to establish the sequence of events leading to the crash.
At this early stage, officials have cautioned that information remains preliminary and may change as the investigation progresses.

Amazon Expresses Condolences
Amazon said it was devastated by the loss of life.
“We’re heartbroken to learn that five people lost their lives in today’s incident at Miami International Airport,” an Amazon spokesperson said. “Our deepest sympathies go out to the families, loved ones, and all those affected by this devastating loss.”
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava also expressed condolences to the victims’ families and praised the emergency responders who rushed to the scene.
“I am grateful to our Miami-Dade Fire Rescue teams and all the first responders who rushed to the scene,” Cava said, according to NBC 6. “Our community stands together tonight with all those impacted as we continue to learn more.”
Another Major Cargo-Plane Disaster Raises Fresh Concerns
Sunday’s crash adds to a series of serious incidents involving cargo aircraft in the United States.
In November 2025, a UPS cargo plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, erupting into a massive fire. That accident killed 14 people.
And in May, a truck traveling on the New Jersey Turnpike was struck by an aircraft landing near Newark Liberty International Airport, an incident that was also captured on video.
For now, investigators are focused on the events at Miami International Airport and the unanswered question of why the Amazon cargo aircraft failed to remain within the runway area after landing.
As the FAA and NTSB begin their investigation, authorities are expected to provide additional information about the victims, the aircraft and the circumstances surrounding the deadly crash.
