Season two of Funboys, the BBC sitcom starring Steve Coogan, has been named “gleefully silly” with an “exceptionally talented cast” following its return to BBC iPlayer on 15 June. Created by Rian Lennon and Ryan Dylan, Funboys follows three emotionally stunted young men as they navigate life in Ballymacnoose, a fictional town in Northern Ireland.
Lennon and Dylan also star in the show as Jordan and Callum, with Lee R James playing Lorcan and Ele McKenzie playing Gemma
Returning cast members include Brian Devlin, Owen Colgan, Paul Bazely and Richard Croxford. Joining Coogan as newcomers to series two are Nicky Harley, Saorlaoith Brady, Lalor Roddy, Donal O’Hanlon and Amanda Doherty.
The synopsis for the second series reads: “The soft bellied boys of Ballymacnoose are back. After last year, tackling the weight of grief and suppository drugs, the gang have come out the other side all grown up.
“Callum’s trying out a lovely perm, Gemma and Lorcan are smooching seven times a day, and it’s been four months since Jordan’s last full throated screaming strop with his Daddies. Things are bright in Ballymacnoose.
“But dark clouds loom! The gang belatedly get involved in The Great Irish Potato Famine and it’s all down-hill from there. Bigotry, balding and competitive robot combat, if they aren’t careful the funboys are about to become the doneboys. Aghh!”
With all four episodes of season two of Funboys now streaming on BBC iPlayer, the reviews are trickling in.
In their review, The Upcoming wrote: “The second series continues the show’s trend of offbeat humour to delightfully silly effect, carried by an exceptionally talented cast. The only real shame is that four episodes is too short a time to spend in Ballymacnoose.”
In their five-star review, The Guardian wrote: “What elevates Funboys beyond standard fare is its gleefully silly mock-earnest tone.
“This stems mainly from the ludicrous sentimentality that surrounds Jordan, Callum and Lorcan’s friendship: there are group hugs and motivational speeches and much self-satisfied appreciation of their three-way bromance.”
Speaking about working on the show, Coogan said: “I loved working with them. They are an original voice in comedy and they have bright futures ahead of them.”
